2010 - Origin of Cells Associated With Nerve Repair Discovered - December 1st, 2010: "Scientists have discovered the origin of a unique type of cell known for its ability to support regeneration in the central nervous system. Their findings, published this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA (PNAS), raise the possibility of obtaining a more reliable source of these cells for use in cell transplantation therapy for spinal cord injuries. [....] For the last 25 years, OECs have been thought to be formed by the nasal lining itself. The new research, however, reveals a different origin for OECs that may enable scientists in the future to produce them in large quantities from adult stem cells. [NP] The researchers, funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Isaac Newton Trust, have discovered that, like all other cells ensheathing peripheral nerve fibres, OECs are actually derived from a group of embryonic stem cells called "neural crest cells." Neural crest stem cells persist in adult skin and hair follicles, and other researchers have already shown that it is possible to isolate these stem cells and grow them in the lab. *Trivia: "May 19, 2011: NASA's Cassini spacecraft and a European Southern Observatory ground-based telescope are tracking the growth of a giant early-spring storm in Saturn's northern hemisphere so powerful that it stretches around the entire planet. The rare storm has been wreaking havoc for months and shooting plumes of gas high into the planet's atmosphere. [NP] 'Nothing on Earth comes close to this powerful storm,' says Leigh Fletcher, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, and lead author of a study that appeared in this week's edition of Science Magazine. 'A storm like this is rare. This is only the sixth one to be recorded since 1876, and the last was way back in 1990.' Cassini's radio and plasma wave science instrument first detected the large disturbance in December [5th] 2010, and amateur astronomers have been watching it ever since through backyard telescopes. As it rapidly expanded, the storm's core developed into a giant, powerful thunderstorm, producing a 3,000-mile-wide (5,000-kilometer-wide) dark vortex possibly similar to Jupiter's Great Red Spot. 2010 - 12,000-Year-Old Mine Found in Northern Chile - December 6th, 2010: "SANTIAGO – A mine from which a prehistoric culture extracted iron oxide 12,000 years ago was discovered in northern Chile by a group of archaeologists, El Mercurio newspaper reported Sunday. [NP] The find took place in the San Ramon ravine in 2008, although this is the first time that the archaeological team has revealed it publicly, and – they say – it could make an important contribution to the understanding of the prehistoric cultures that lived in the Taltal area, some 1,100 kilometers (682 miles) north of Santiago. [NP] The ancient people who exploited the mine were members of the Huentelauquen culture, which used iron oxide for ceremonial purposes, archaeologists said. [NP] This is the oldest mine discovered in the Americas, much older than one used 2,500 years ago that was discovered in the United States, University of Chile professor Diego Salazar said. [NP] In South Africa, a 40,000-year-old mine was discovered, in Australia there is one that was used 30,000 years ago and in Greece there is a 15,000-year-old mine, Salazar said. [NP] The Huentelauquen culture, which inhabited the area, was discovered in 1961 and to date very little is known about its members, who were nomadic hunters and gatherers but also lived from fishing and collecting shellfish. [NP] The exploitation of the mine “indicates the importance of religious activity in their way of life because iron oxide is not eaten, is not sold, is not bought,” and it was used as a coloring agent in religious rites, Salazar said. 2010 - Lost Civilization Under Persian Gulf? - December 8th, 2010: "A once fertile landmass now submerged beneath the Persian Gulf may have been home to some of the earliest human populations outside Africa, according to an article published Wednesday in Current Anthropology. [NP] In recent years, archaeologists have turned up evidence of a wave of human settlements along the shores of the Gulf dating to about 7,500 years ago. But how could such highly developed settlements pop up so quickly, with no precursor populations to be found in the archaeological record? Jeffrey Rose, an archaeologist and researcher with the University of Birmingham in the U.K., believes that evidence of those preceding populations is missing because it's under the Gulf. [NP] 'Perhaps it is no coincidence that the founding of such remarkably well developed communities along the shoreline corresponds with the flooding of the Persian Gulf basin around 8,000 years ago,' Rose said. 'These new colonists may have come from the heart of the Gulf, displaced by rising water levels that plunged the once fertile landscape beneath the waters of the Indian Ocean.' [NP] Rose said that the area in and around this 'Persian Gulf Oasis' may have been host to humans for over 100,000 years before it was swallowed up by the Indian Ocean around 8,000 years ago. [NP] 'Where before there had been but a handful of scattered hunting camps, suddenly, over 60 new archaeological sites appear virtually overnight,' Rose said. 'These settlements boast well-built, permanent stone houses, long-distance trade networks, elaborately decorated pottery, domesticated animals, and even evidence for one of the oldest boats in the world.' [NP] Historical sea level data show that, prior to the flood, the Gulf basin would have been above water beginning about 75,000 years ago. And it would have been an ideal refuge from the harsh deserts surrounding it, with fresh water supplied by the Tigris, Euphrates, Karun, and Wadi Baton Rivers, as well as by underground springs. When conditions were at their driest in the surrounding hinterlands, the Gulf Oasis would have been at its largest in terms of exposed land area. At its peak, the exposed basin would have been about the size of Great Britain, Rose says. [NP] Evidence is also emerging that modern humans could have been in the region even before the oasis was above water. Recently discovered archaeological sites in Yemen and Oman have yielded a stone tool style that is distinct from the East African tradition. That raises the possibility that humans were established on the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula beginning as far back as 100,000 years ago or more, Rose says. That is far earlier than the estimates generated by several recent migration models, which place the first successful migration into Arabia between 50,000 and 70,000 years ago. [NP] The Gulf Oasis would have been available to these early migrants, and would have provided 'a sanctuary throughout the Ice Ages when much of the region was rendered uninhabitable due to hyperaridity,' Rose said. 'The presence of human groups in the oasis fundamentally alters our understanding of human emergence and cultural evolution in the ancient Near East.' It also hints that vital pieces of the human evolutionary puzzle may be hidden in the depths of the Persian Gulf."

2010 - "Embedded Carbon Emissions" / China - December 13th, 2010: "[....] The important factor to consider in this world transfer of carbon emissions is that a substantial fraction — about one-sixth or more — of China’s coal consumption and resulting emissions comes from the manufacturing of products dedicated for the same countries that are trying to lessen their use of coal in the first place. It’s like a massive Ponzi scheme where we emit more carbon than ever before, but we do so through Chinese smokestacks instead of our own. [NP] It works like this: Just as companies use offshore bank accounts to hide their cash flows, countries use offshore manufacturing to hide their carbon flows. As a consequence, the carbon emissions for European countries and the U.S. hold steady or decline despite economic and population growth, while China’s emissions grow exponentially as they accommodate their own growth while soaking up some of the emissions from developed countries. [NP] This concept is referred to as 'embedded carbon emissions.' Researchers have determined that approximately 1 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions in China are from the creation of products destined for export to other countries. Because of their carbon emissions, you could say that carbon emissions is China’s greatest import. Or it’s our greatest export. *Trivia: "[....] Scientists at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory believe that Voyager 1 entered the termination shock in February 2003.[5] Some other scientists have expressed doubt, discussed in the journal Nature of November 6, 2003.[6] In a scientific session at the American Geophysical Union meeting in New Orleans on the morning of May 25, 2005, Dr. Ed Stone presented evidence that Voyager 1 crossed the termination shock in December 2004. [NP] The issue will not be resolved until other data becomes available, since Voyager 1's solar-wind detector ceased functioning in 1990. This failure has meant that termination shock detection must be inferred from the data from the other instruments on board. [NP] However, in May 2005 a NASA press release said that consensus was that Voyager 1 was now in the heliosheath.[7] Scientists anticipated that the craft will reach the heliopause in 2015, but evidence that Voyager 1 reached the Heliopause appeared in late 2010.[8] [NP] Because Voyager 1 has entered into the heliosheath, it is the farthest human-made object from Earth, traveling away from both the Earth and the Sun at a relatively faster speed than any other probe. [....] On December 13, 2010, it was confirmed that Voyager 1 passed the reach of the solar wind emanating from the Sun. Since June of 2010, detection of solar wind has been consistently at zero. On this date, the spacecraft was approximately 17.3 billion km (10.8 billion miles) from the Sun. 2010 - New study links cancer, A-bomb fallout - December 15th, 2010: "A study that used a rediscovered stash of St. Louis baby teeth to research the health impact of atom bomb testing in the 1950s got a boost this month [December 2010] when it was published in an international science journal. [NP] The study by Janette Sherman and Joseph Mangano in The International Journal of Health Services suggests the link between atom bomb fallout residue found in baby teeth and the incidence of cancer in those same donors about 40 to 50 years later. The authors found that the level of strontium 90 was 122 percent higher in teeth of 50-year-old men who had cancer than those without. Strontium 90 is not naturally occurring on Earth and is produced in atomic explosions. It is readily absorbed into calcium-rich teeth and bones. [NP] The study got its start in 2001 when Washington University rediscovered 85,000 baby teeth stored in its Tyson Research Center since the 1970s Those teeth were originally part of the St. Louis Baby Tooth Survey, in which nearly 300,000 area children sent their teeth to local researchers who then determined that children were absorbing radioactive fallout from nuclear bomb tests. [NP] Mangano, executive director of the radiation and Public Health Project in New York, said it took nine years to get funding for the newer study to track down about 1,000 male donors, analyze the teeth and make the comparisons. The researchers first shatred their results publicly about 14 months ago. [NP] 'Discovering high fallout levels in U.S. baby boomers exposed as infants during the Cold War who died of cancer at an early age is an important step in the effort to understand damage from bomb testing,' Mangano said. [....]" [Based on: Title for article (New study links cancer, A-bomb fallout / Researchers analyzed baby teeth from an earlier, WU study to connect now-adult donors, incidence of cancer.) by Nancy Cambria, p. A4, S.L.P.D., 12/15/10] - [My brackets. NP = New paragraph. - D.R.D.]

*Trivia: "[....] The new research was spurred by the 2001 reappearance of 85,000 teeth that had been donated for the 1960s study, which was conducted by Washington University [Mo.] scientists. The teeth were found in an old bunker at the university's Tyson Research Center, where they had been stuffed into envelopes that included information about the donors, one of whom was Edward Ketterer ['he passed away in 2006 at the age of 47'] [....] Washington University scientists analyzed most of the teeth for strontium-90, which was created by the bomb blasts and absorbed by the teeth and bones of infants. [NP] They suspected that the children were exposed by drinking milk from cows and goats that grazed on grass contanimated by fallout. They called it the 'milk pathway.' [NP] The study concluded that St. Louis children born in 1964 had about 50 times more strontium-90 in their baby teeth than those born in 1950, before the start of atomic testing in Nevada. [....] Of the healthy donors, levels of strontium-90 were insignificant, the research shows. 2010 - Fed extends plan on European debt - December 22nd, 2010: "The Federal Reserve extended a program established this year [2010] to ease strains from the European debt crisis. [NP] The program, which was set to expire in January [2011], will now run through Aug. 1 [2011], the Fed announced Tuesday. [NP] The Fed is lending dollars to other central banks in exchange for their currencies. The central banks can lend those dollars to banks in their home countries to ease financial turmoil. [NP] The Fed's 'swap' program was set up in May as fears rose that Greece's debt crisis could engulf other European countries. European banks need dollars to lend to companies across the continent. European companies that have operations in the U.S. pay their employees in dollars and buy raw materials with the U.S. currency. [NP] The Bank of Canada, the Bank of England, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, and the Swiss National Bank all have swap arrangements with the Fed. 'The reality is [in?] Europe isn't out of the woods yet. This extends a tool to central banks if they need it,' said Nariman Behravesh, chief economist at IHS Global Insight. [NP] Use of the program peaked in May [2010], shortly after the swap arrangements were set up. The Fed had lent the European Central Bank $9.2 billion, and was repaid. [NP] In June, the Fed had lent $6.64 billion through the program. Most of the money went to the European Central Bank, and was repaid. Use of the program has since waned. As of early December, the Fed lent only $60 million to the European Central Bank. [NP] However, the debt crisis has spread from Greece to Ireland, which required a $90 billion bailout in late November from the European Union and International Monetary Fund. The crisis threatens other European countries, including Spain and Portugal." [Based on: A.P. article (Fed extends plan on European debt) by Jeannine Aversa, p.
