2006 - Unable to understand - November 1st, 2006:

We, an oil-needy superpower, attacked a disheveled, oil-rich country that couldn't organize a picnic. We occupied the country by force, disbanded all civil authority and did nothing as it descended into anarchy amid a crippled infrastructure. We conducted wholesale roundups of anyone accused by those with petty scores to settle. We imprisoned innocent people and eventually released some, but only after we tortured them in order to liberate them from torture. We beat some to death. We humiliated others in grotesquely depraved and sexually perverse ways for the entire world to see, instantly converting non-militant Islamic moderates into bomb-wearing jihadists. We ignored every lesson from Vietnam and destroyed cities to "save" them, as innocent people were made homeless or were slaughtered in the crossfire.
Our politically connected corporations swarmed into the country to make sure they, not Iraqis, profited from rebuilding what had been destroyed. Now, the great majority of the Iraqi people want us dead or gone, or both. Why are the Republicans unqualified to lead and protect our country? Because they are incapable of understanding how any of the above events could have created more enemies of America."

2006 - Surprising Differences / Human Genome Map - November 22nd, 2006:

LONDON (Nov. 22) - One person's DNA code can be as much as 10 percent different from another's, researchers said on Wednesday in a finding that questions the idea that everyone on Earth is 99.9 percent identical genetically. [....] Instead of showing single variations in human DNA that make people unique, the map looks at differences in duplications and deletions of large DNA segments known as copy number variants or CNVs, which can help explain why some people are susceptible to illnesses such as AIDS and others are not. [....] Scientists from more than a dozen centers around the world identified about 3,000 genes with variations in the number of copies of specific DNA segments. The changes can affect gene activity, including susceptibility to diseases. [....] "We estimate this to be at least 12 percent of the genome, similar in extent to SNPs. This has never been shown before," said Dr. Matthew Hurles of Britain's Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. [N.P.] He said that resistance to infection by HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is determined in part by multiple copies of the gene CCL3L1, which cannot be seen on an SNP map."
