2006 - Middle East War / Next Phase? - September 5th, 2006:

The Next Phase of the Middle East War

By Michel Chossudovsky

09/05/06 "GlobalResearch" - Israel's war on Lebanon is an integral part of a US sponsored "military roadmap".

The war on Lebanon, which has resulted in countless atrocities including the destruction of the nation's economy and civilian infrastructure, is "a stage" in a sequence of carefully planned military operations.

Lebanon constitutes a strategic corridor between Israel and North-western Syria. The underlying objective of this war was the militarization of Lebanon, including the stationing of foreign troops, as a precondition for carrying out the next phase of a broader military agenda.

Formally under a UN mandate, the foreign troops to be stationed on Lebanese soil on the immediate border with Syria, will be largely although not exclusively from NATO countries. This military force mandated by the UN Security Council is by no means neutral. It responds directly to US and Israeli interests.

Moreover, the timely withdrawal of Syrian troops, following the February 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri has contributed to opening up a "new space". The withdrawal of Syrian troops served Israeli interests. The timely pullout was of strategic significance: it was a major factor in the timing and planning of the July 2006 IDF attacks on Lebanon.

In the aftermath of the Israeli bombings and the "ceasefire", UN Security Council Resolution 1701, drafted by France and the US in close consultation with the Israeli government, has paved the way for the militarization of Lebanon, under a bogus UN mandate.

The Next Phase of the Middle East War

Confirmed by official statements and military documents, the US in close coordination with Britain (and in consultation with its NATO partners), is planning to launch a war directed against Iran and Syria. US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton has already initiated the draft of a UN Security Council resolution with a view to imposing sanctions on Tehran for its alleged (nonexistent) nuclear weapons program. Whether this resolution is adopted is not the main issue. The US may decide to proceed in defiance of the Security Council, following a veto by Russia and/or China. The vote of France and Britain, among the permanent members has already been secured.

US military sources have confirmed that an aerial attack, pursuant to a sanctions regime on Iran, with or without UN approval, would involve a large scale deployment comparable to the US "shock and awe" bombing raids on Iraq in March 2003: [....] see link

2006 - Israeli-US Strategy: Lebanon and Iran - September 6th, 2006:

The War Debate on Iran

A survey of Israeli State pronouncements, documents and press releases echoed by its resident representatives in the Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and their supporters writing and speaking in the major media reveals a concerted effort to convince the United States to militarily attack Iran. Beginning in the mid 1990’s, Israel’s top US ideologues promulgated documents and propaganda manifestos, purporting to be strategy papers directed toward joint US-Israeli aggression against Iraq, Syria and especially Iran.(1)

Even as the bricks were still smoldering from 9/11, Israeli ideological point men, Senator Lieberman and Undersecretary for Defense Wolfowitz urged Washington to attack Iran by launching either simultaneous or sequential wars. In pursuit of Israel’s regional priorities, its representatives in the US Government, in the Pentagon (Wolfowitz, Feith and Shulsky), in the National Security Council (Abrams), in the Vice President’s Office (Libby) and in the President’s Office (Speech writer Frum) falsified intelligence, designed the propaganda (War Against Terror, Axis of Evil) and planned the War against Iraq, and with the Lobby secured near unanimous Congressional acquiescence. They then successfully secured a US boycott of Syria and support for Israel’s expropriation, annexation and settlement of Palestinian land in the West Bank and the destruction of Gaza. Even as the US invasion failed to secure control of Iraq, Israel’s representatives in the US Government did destroy Iraqi society and state, and its capacity to support the Palestinian resistance, increasing Israel’s regional power (at a very high cost to the United States).

Even as the US was at war with Iraq, even as it suffered over 20,000 dead and wounded, even as its war spending rose to over $430 billion dollars, even as the bulk of its ground troops were stretched thin, Israel’s representatives in the Executive and Congress and through the Lobby pushed for a US pre-emptive attack on Iran. It also explicitly bans beating prisoners, sexually humilitating them, threatening them with dogs, depriving them of food or water, performing mock executions, shocking them with electricity, burning them, causing other pain and a technique called 'water boarding' that simulates drowning, said Lt. Gen. John Kimmons, Army Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence. Officials said the revisions are based on lessons learned since the U.S. began taking prisoners after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. 2006 - Plan to Limit Detainee Rights / George W. Bush - September 8th, 2006: "President George W. Bush's campaign to limit the courtroom rights of terrorism suspects ran into opposition Thursday [09/07/06] from key Republican senators and even from high-ranking military lawyers. The opponents said the limits would violate basic principles of justice. The military lawyers told a House panel that they particulary objected to Bush's bid to allow suspects to be convicted on secret evidence that is witheld from the defendents. [....] Under Bush's proposal, any detainee eventually put forward for trial could be adjudged under conditions that differ sharply from standard U.S. criminal trials. Those eligible for such military trials would be any foreigners  deemed 'unlawful enemy combatants.' At the trials, prosecutors could use classified information that the defendants and their lawyers would not be told about. The prosecutors could also relay on hearsay - evidence obtained indirectly - and evidence obtained by coercion if the panel's chief deems it reliable and related to the accusations. A rival set of rules was circulated earlier this week by Warner, McCain and Graham. Among other things, it would bar any use in the trials of secret evidence or information obtained from 'cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.' 2006 - Growing Secularism? / Western Europe - September 11th, 2006: "Under glorious skies in the Bavarian capital where he once lived, Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday [09/10/06] warned Roman Catholics against letting modern concerns drown out God's word, adding that technology alone cannot solve the world's problems. Overreliance on science has made too many Catholics deaf to the teachings of the church, the pope said in a homily that scolded Western European societies for their increasingly secular focus. Faith is also needed to combat diseases such as AIDS, he said. On the second day of his six-day homecoming pilgrimage, the pope spoke to about 250,000 followers at a huge open-air Mass in fairgrounds on the outskirts of Munich. While he has described the trip as a highly personal one, the former Joseph Ratzinger is also determined to boost a faith that by most measures is flagging in Europe." 2006 - Novak Disputes Source's Story of Leak - September 14th, 2006: "Columnist Robert Novak ... is accusing his primary source of misrepresenting their conversation to make the source's role in the disclosure seem more casual than it was. In an unusual column that appears today [09/14/06], Novak says his initial source, former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, was more sure of Plame's ties to the CIA than Armitage has indicated. Novak adds that Armitage linked her directly to her husband's CIA-sponsored trip to Niger and suggested the disclosure would be a good item for Novak's column. This differs from Armitage's assertions last week [September 2006] that his disclosure was made in an offhand manner and that he did not know why Plame's husband was sent to Niger. Armitage, in an interview Wednesday [09/13/06], said he stood by his account and disputed Novak's. The disagreement between Novak and Armitage now covers even the length of their conversation in Armitage's office at the State Department on July 8, 2003. [NP = new paragraph] The bones may be the best fossil yet found of the primitive human ancestor Australopithecus afarensis. That is the same species as the superstar fossil dubbed Lucy, an adult female discovered nearby in 1974. [NP] The skeleton, described in the British scientific journal Nature and National Geographic magazine, represents the first juvenile remains of these ancient humanlike creatures, making the fossil the oldest child by far ever found. [....] .... From the waste down, the skeleton looks like a human's. But her upper body had many apelike features.. Her brain was small, her nose flat like a chimpanzee's and her face long and projecting. Her finger bones were curved  and almost as long as a chimp's. [....] Some parts of the skeleton are missing - the pelvis, the lowest part of the back and parts of the limbs - but what is preserved is remarkably complete. The brain case, the lower jaw with most of its teeth, both collar bones, many vertebrae and ribs, the fingers, both kneecaps and the delicate bone that holds open the throat, called the hyoid, are all present. [....] The fossil-hunting team happened upon the skeleton in 2000 in a region plagued by extreme heat, flash floods, malaria, wild beasts and occasional shootouts between rival ethnic groups.
