2008 - In the Genes? / Smoking Addiction - April 3rd, 2008: "Why do some 90-year-old chain smokers avoid lung cancer, while other people who smoke far less wind up dying of the disease? How can some people light up now and then without getting hooked, while others are addicted from their first puffs? [NP] The answer, at least in part, may be in the genes. [NP] Scientists have identified genetic variations that appear to make people more likely to get hooked on cigarettes and more prone to lung cancer. [....] The researchers disagreed on whether the variants directly increased the risk of lung cancer or did so indirectly, by causing smoking. [NP] The three studies, funded by governments in the U.S. and Europe, are being published today [04/03/08] in the journals Nature and Nature Genetics. [....] They aren't quite sure if what they found is a set of variantions in one gene or in three closely connected genes. But the gene variations govern nicotine receptors on cells. [....] One clue is in the location of the just-discovered variants, on the long arm of chromosome 15, Volkow [Dr. Nora Volkow] said. It is in an area that, when damaged during tests on animals, makes them depressed and anxious. That suggests that adding antidepressants to some smokers' treatment could help them kick the habit. 2008 - 2001 Secret Memo Revealed / U.S.A. - April 3rd, 2008: "For at least 16 months after the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001, the Bush administration believed that the Constitution's protection against unreasonable searches and seizures on U.S. soil didn't apply to its efforts to protect against terrorism. [NP] That view was expressed in a secret Justice Department legal memo dated Oct. 23, 2001. The administration on Wednesday [04/02/08] stressed that it now disavows that view. [....] The 37-page memo is classified and has not been released. Its existence was disclosed Tuesday [04/01/08] in a footnote of a separate secret memo, dated March 14, 2003, released by the Pentagon in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union." 2008 - Fuel Consumption Trivia / U.S. Military - April 3rd, 2008: "[....] Military units pay an average of $3.23 a gallon for gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, some $88 a day per service member in Iraq, according to an Associated Press review and interviews with defense officials. A penny or two increase in the price of fuel can add millions of dollars to U.S. costs. [....] Overall, the military consumes about 1.2 million barrels, or more than 50 million gallons of fuel, each month in Iraq at an average $127.68 a barrel. That works out to about $153 million a month. [NP] Historically, these figures are astounding. In World War II, the average fuel consumption per soldier or Marine was about 1.67 gallons a day; in Iraq, it's 27.3 gallons, according to briefing slides prepared by a Pentagon task force established to review consumption. [....] Under a current agreement, a Kuwait-owned company supplies 7,000 gallons per day of free fuel to U.S. forces operating inside Kuwait. For troops in Iraq, Kuwait offers 860,000 gallons of jet fuel a day at less than half the market price. This discounted fuel represents more than half the fuel the U.S. uses in Iraq each day. [NP] The rest of the fuel - about 100,000 to 200,000 gallons a day - is sold to the U.S. military at market rate. 2008 - Neurodegeneration Link? / Excessive Amounts of Aspartame - April 3rd, 2008: "03-Apr-2008 - Excessive intake of aspartame may inhibit the ability of enzymes in the brain to function normally, suggests a new review that could fan the flames of controversy over the sweetener. [NP] The review, by scientists from the University of Pretoria and the University of Limpopo and published recently in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, indicated that high consumption of the sweetener may lead to neurodegeneration. [....] They found aspartame can disturb the metabolism of amino acids, protein structure and metabolism, the integrity of nucleic acids, neuronal function and endocrine balances. It also may change the brain concentrations of catecholamines, which include norepinephrine, epinephrine and domapine. [NP] Additionally, they said the breakdown of aspartame causes nerves to fire excessively, which can indirectly lead to a high rate of neuron depolarisation. [NP] The researchers added: 'The energy systems for certain required enzyme reactions become compromised, thus indirectly leading to the inability of enzymes to function optimally.' [NP] 'The ATP stores [adenosine triphosphate] in the cells are depleted, indicating that low concentrations of glucose are present in the cells, and this in turn will indirectly decrease the synthesis of acetylcholine, glutamate and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid).' [NP] Furthermore, the functioning of glutamate as an excitatory neurotransmitter is inhibited as a result of the intracellular calcium uptake being altered, and mitochondria are damaged, which the researchers said could lead to apoptosis (cell death) of cells and also a decreased rate of oxidative metabolism. [NP] As a result of their study, the researchers said more testing is required to further determine the health effects on aspartame and bring an end to the controversy." [NP] Flora Jessop, a former member of the polygamist Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, said she first received a call on March 30 from a woman since identified as Rozita Swinton of Colorado Springs, claiming to be an abuse victim named Sarah. Jessop operates a rescue mission for teenage girls trying to escape the sect. [NP] Swinton, 33, was arrested at her home Wednesday [04/16/08] on charges of false reporting in two Colorado cases. [NP] Israel's housing minister said Israel never promised to freeze all such construction, although a U.S.-backed peace plan calls for a moratorium on settlement building. [NP] In a television interview, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the expansion of settlements has emerged as a key obstacle to progress in peace negotiations with Israel." Palestinians must end attacks on Israelis and Israel must end its occupation, he said. [....] One of the largest obstacles  hindering security is the split between Abbas, who controls the West Bank, and the militant group Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip and refuses to give up armed conflict with Israel. [NP] Israel insists that Abbas must regain control of Gaza and stop the almost daily rocket fire that militants lob from there into Israel before the Jewish state withdraws from the West Bank. [NP] Acknowledging that Gaza was a crucial problem that needed to be solved, Abbas pointed to Israeli actions such as continuous settlement building, debilitating checkpoint systems and military operations in the West Bank as the main impediments to peace."
