2010 - Giant Ribbon at the Edge of the Solar System: Mystery Solved? - January 15th, 2010: "[....] 'We believe the ribbon is a reflection,' says Jacob Heerikhuisen, a NASA Heliophysics Guest Investigator from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. 'It is where solar wind particles heading out into interstellar space are reflected back into the solar system by a galactic magnetic field.' [....] 'This is an important finding,' says Arik Posner, IBEX program scientist at NASA Headquarters. "Interstellar space just beyond the edge of the solar system is mostly unexplored territory. Now we know, there could be a strong, well-organized magnetic field sitting right on our doorstep.' [....] Although maps of the ribbon ... seem to show a luminous body, the ribbon emits no light. Instead, it makes itself known via particles called 'energetic neutral atoms' (ENAs) - mainly garden-variety hydrogen atoms. The ribbon emits these particles, which are picked up by IBEX in Earth orbit. [....] The reflection process posited by Heerikhuisen et al. is a bit complicated, involving multiple 'charge exchange' reactions between protons and hydrogen atoms. The upshot, however, is simple. Particles from the solar wind that escape the solar system are met ~100 astronomical units (~15 billion kilometers) away by an interstellar magnetic field. Magnetic forces intercept the escaping particles and sling them right back where they came from. [NP] 'If this mechanism is correct - and not everyone agrees - then the shape of the ribbon is telling us a lot about the orientation of the magnetic field in our corner of the Milky Way galaxy,' notes Heerikhuisen. [NP] And upon this field, the future may hinge. [NP] The solar system is passing through a region of the Milky Way filled with cosmic rays and interstellar clouds. The magnetic field of our own sun, inflated by the solar wind into a bubble called the 'heliosphere,' substantially protects us from these things. However, the bubble itself is vulnerable to external fields. A strong magnetic field just outside the solar system could press against the heliosphere and interact with it in unknown ways. Will this strengthen our natural shielding—or weaken it? No one can say. [....] 'IBEX will monitor the ribbon closely in the months and years ahead,' says Posner. 'We could see the shape of the ribbon change—and that would show us how we are interacting with the galaxy beyond.' [NP] It seems we can learn a lot by looking in the mirror. Stay tuned to Science@NASA for updates."

2010 - Terrestrial Gamma-Ray Flashes - January 29th, 2010: "January 29, 2010: High-energy bursts of gamma rays typically occur far out in space, perhaps near black holes or other high-energy cosmic phenomena. So imagine scientists' surprise in the mid-1990s when they found these powerful gamma ray flashes happening right here on Earth, in the skies overhead. [NP] They're called Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes, or TGFs, and very little is known about them. They seem to have a connection with lightning, but TGFs themselves are something entirely different. [....] To investigate, Rowland and his colleagues at GSFC, Siena College, Universities Space Research Association, and the Hawk Institute for Space Sciences are planning to launch a tiny, football-sized satellite called Firefly in 2010 or 2011. [NP] According to a report in National Geographic News, the discovery of the complex, excavated near the city of Chiclayo between 2006 and late 2009, has injected a dose of reality into the legend of Naylamp, the god who supposedly founded the pre-Inca Lambayeque civilization in the eighth century A.D., following the collapse of the Moche civilization. [....] The presence of a throne-used only by the god Naylamp in Lambayeque folklore-and other indicators in the newfound temple, such as an adjacent room for religious ceremonies, suggest that the Lambayeque people viewed their rulers, thought to be Naylamp’s descendants, as semi-divine figures. 2010 - Nanoprinter could have cells lining up to be tested - January 31st, 2010: "BORROWING a trick from the office photocopier may make it possible for a nanoscale printer to precisely manipulate biological cells for use in artificial tissue. [NP] In 2007, John Rogers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and colleagues produced a printer small enough to print electronic circuits from conductive ink on the nanoscale. By modifying the technique, they think it should be possible to manipulate biological cells or biomolecules such as DNA, says Rogers. [....] Once a pattern of charge is printed onto a substrate, the static could attract charged molecules and cells, marshalling them into shape in the same way toner inside a photocopier is forced into the required design.
