"[....] The propaganda is the dangerous tool in the hands of ruthless people. It is an instrument for the dissemination of falsehood, hatred and terror and one of the most wicked scourges of mankind. It should be totally abandoned because of its horrible and destructive effects and consequences. In the interest of peace, all nations must eliminate their propaganda departments and replace them with an information department which would broadcast nothing but the truth and would give out only friendship, peace, harmony and goodwill. 2009 - Trivia / War-Related Deaths, Iraq & Afghanistan - January 1st, 2009: "U.S. military deaths in Iraq plunged by two-thirds in 2008 from the previous year, a reflection of the improving security following the U.S. military's counterinsurgency campaign and al-Qaida's slow retreat from the battlefield. [NP] By comparison, the war in Afghanistan saw American military deaths rise by 35 percent in 2008 as Islamic extremists shift their focus to a new front. [NP] According to a tally by The Associated Press, at least 314 U.S. soldiers died in Iraq in 2008, down from 904 in the previous year. In all, at least 4,221 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq since the war began in 2003. [NP] For Iraqis, the plunge was also marked: During 2008, at least 7,496 Iraqis died in war-related violence according to an AP count, down 60 percent from 2007. [NP] The tally does not reflect a comprehensive total for Iraqi deaths because reports do not come from all of the country. The estimate, however, has proven accurate for tracking trends. [NP] In Afghanistan, 151 U.S. soldiers died in 2008, compared with 111 in the previous year, according to an AP tally. The count recorded 1,160 civilians killed in insurgency-related violence, up from 875. [NP] At least 625 U.S. soldiers have died because of the war in Afghanistan since the fighting began in 2001. [NP] The count is based on figures from Afghan, U.S. and NATO officials. [NP] The combined total of at least 465 U.S. deaths in both Iraq and Afghanistan for 2008 is the lowest combined total for both wars since 2003, when the U.S. invaded Iraq. [NP] The findings far exceed levels reported by the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Environmental Protection Agency or the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. [NP] The TVA and the state have released only results of tests on water sampled just after the spill, six miles away and upstream of the ash flow, which showed that the water at that spot met drinking standards. [....] Appalachian Voices sampled water taken from three locations - near the site, about half a mile downstream, and about two miles downstream - and found eight metals that exceeded drinking water limits. At the two-mile point, arsenic was at a level 35 times the drinking water limit. The group also expressed concern about standards for fish and aquatic life. [....] A news release from the group included a statement by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., chairman of the national Waterkeeper Alliance, who said, 'Although these results are preliminary, we want to release them because of the public health concern and because we believe the TVA and EPA aren't being candid.' 2009 - Trivia / Space Weather Report - January 6th, 2009: "The National Academy of Sciences has just released the results of a study entitled Severe Space Weather Events - Understanding Societal and Economic Impacts. The 132-page document examines what might happen to our high-tech modern society in the event of a super solar flare followed by an extreme geomagnetic storm. Such a storm did occur in the year 1859. It electrified telegraph lines, shocking technicians and setting telegraph papers on fire; Northern Lights as far south as Cuba were so bright, you could read a newspaper by their eerie glow. (continued below) [....] According to the report, 'a contemporary repetition of that event would cause significantly more extensive (and possibly catastrophic) social and economic disruptions.' The report warns of widespread failures in telecommunications, electric power, banking and finance, and transportation; even water supplies could be disrupted. The total economic impact in the first year alone could reach $2 trillion - about 15 times greater than the costs of Hurricane Katrina. Depending on damage, full recovery from the solar storm could take 4 to 6 years. [NP] No one knows how often super solar storms occur. We've only seen one like it in the past 200 years. The next one could be another 200 years away - or just 200 days. All the more reason to study space weather!"

Some Democrats expressed strong support for the choice, with Harry Reid of Nevada, the Senate majority leader, describing him as 'one of the finest public servants I have ever served with and dealt with since he left the White House.' [....] Obama's choices for four senior Justice Department positions Monday [01/05/09] also signaled he intends to roll back Bush administration counterterrorism policies authorizing harsh interrogation techniques, warrantless spying and indefinite detentions of terrorism suspects. 2009 - Space Weather Report - January 7th, 2009: "The National Academy of Sciences has released an important new report detailing how geomagnetic storms could damage the infrastructure of modern society. An area of particular vulnerability is power grids. Ground currents induced during century-class storms can actually melt the copper windings of huge, multi-ton transformers at the heart of some power distribution systems. Because modern power grids are interconnected, a cascade of failures could sweep across the country, rapidly cutting power to tens or even hundreds of millions of people: [....] According to the report, 'impacts would be felt on interdependent infrastructures with, for example, potable water distribution affected within several hours; perishable foods and medications lost in 12-24 hours; immediate or eventual loss of heating/air conditioning, sewage disposal, phone service, transportation, fuel resupply and so on.' Melted transformers can take months to repair or replace--so a single extreme storm could make itself felt long after solar activity subsides. Nothing, it seems, is immune from space weather. [NP] And while state environmental regulators say it's unlikely a similar collapse would occur here [Mo.], some worry about the fact that many ponds are near rivers that supply drinking water. [NP] 'Coal ash is toxic and the last place in the world it should be is next to water,' said Kathy Andria, director of the American Bottom Conservancy, and Illinois-based environmental group. 'When you factor in climate change - and the increased potential for greater rainfall events - you raise the risk that these dam walls become weakened and we're looking at a serious problem.' [NP] Despite growing concerns about the risk from coal combustion waste, there are no national standards for its storage and disposal. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency does not consider the waste 'hazardous' even though it contains harmful metals such as lead and arsenic. [....] Illinois did not require ponds to be lined until 1989, after state environmental regulators discovered pollution seeping from the Havana, Hennepin and Wood River Plants, which were owned by Illinois Power at the time. 'Havana and Hennepin leaked as much as they held I think,' said Darin LeCrone, a manager in Illinois EPA's bureau of water permit section. 'Once we became aware of those problems we changed our regulations.' [....] In 2006, Ameren's Labadie Power Plant opened an onsite concrete packaging facility where it mixes about 10,000 tons of fly ash and 600,000 tons of bottom ash annually into about 2 million bags of concrete. [NP] In addition, fly ash from Ameren plants is used in road construction projects in both Missouri and Illinois. [NP] 'Over 50 to 60 percent of our ash is recycled,' Menne [Michael Menne, 'Ameren's vice president for environmental safety and health'] said. 'That's a pretty significant amount and we're always looking to recycle more.' 2009 - Found Not Harmful / Thimerosal - January 26th, 2009: "[....] Thimerosal, used in some vaccines to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungus, hasn't been in U.S. childhood vaccines since 2001, except for certain flu shots. Italy and other European nations began removing it in 1999. U.S. health officials recommended the removal of thimerosal as a precaution and to reduce the overall exposure of children to mercury. [....] The study [see the February issue of the Journal Pediatrics], funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drew praise from outside experts. [....] The children received either 62.5 micrograms or 137.5 micrograms of ethyl mercury from all their shots during their first year of life. Thimerosal breaks down as ethyl mercury in the body. Before the reduction of thimerosal in the United States, the maximum exposure for infants was 187.5 micrograms of ethyl mercury. 2009 - Drugs taint water near plants in India - January 26th, 2009: "PATANCHERU, INDIA - When researchers analyzed vials of treated wastewater taken from a plant where about 90 Indian drug factories dump their residues, they were shocked. Enough of a single, powerful antibiotic was being spewed into one stream each day to treat every person in a city of 90,000. [NP] And it wasn't just ciprofloxacin being detected. The supposedly cleaned water was a floating medicine cabinet - a soup of 21 different active pharmaceutical ingredients.. [< typo?] Half of the drugs measured at the highest levels of pharmaceuticals ever detected in the environment, researchers say. [....] Last year, The Associated Press reported that trace concentrations of pharmaceuticals had been found in drinking water provided to at least 46 million Americans. But the wastewater downstream from the Indian plants contained 150 times the highest levels detected in the United States. [....] Pharmaceutical contamination is an emerging concern worldwide. In its series of articles, the AP documented the commonplace presence of minute concentrations of pharmaceuticals in U.S. drinking water supplies. The AP also found that trace concentrations of pharmaceuticals were almost ubiquitous in rivers, lakes and streams.
