1965 - Paul Twitchell / Orion Magazine - Jan-Feb 1965? "More harm is done in prayer for another to change his conscience than any other form of occult technique. But it is one of the common practices of the clergy to change the conscience of the nonconformist so he cannot harm the cause of the church. [NP] Every man has his right to freedom without interference from another. He must be granted psychic space of what is called beingness. When anyone interferes with this freedom of another, crowds his space, nature will exact a severe penalty. [NP] Nobody has the power to judge what is good for another person's conscience. This is the individual's own superior right in the kingdom of God. Everyone must have his own freedom of will and thought, and the, opportunity to exercise this freedom. - Paul Twitchell, in ORION." 1965 - Parapsychology Group / San Diego - March 26th, 1965? "[....] I went to one of the parapsychology groups there and made a talk, it was the 26th of March. Then I wrote a parapsychology group in Long Beach and they gave me a date and I went up there. I only had about four people there at that meeting [including a little lady] [....] And that's where I got started and opened up and it blossomed into what it is today, the whole works of ECKANKAR - of what it is today. Trivia: " [....] 'I went to San Francisco in late November of '64 [should be 1963?] and left her in Seattle. Then I couldn't stand it there without her, so I drove back to her home near South Bend, Washington, and married her [01/17/64]. [NP] The first year [1964?] was rough, but we made it. She worked and I wrote discourses on Eckankar. The next year [1965?] we moved from San Francisco to San Diego, where Gail went to work in a small city library. Gail now [1965?] believed that it was time for me to bring out ECK, just as the ECK masters had been telling me. I had promised Gail that she might go back to college and complete her education when I went to ECK full-time, so she is a student [1968?] once again.' 1965 - Soul Travel Workshops / California Parapsychology Foundation - May 1965: "[....] By May of 1965, Paul was conducting Soul Travel workshops at the California Parapsychology Foundation in San Diego. In trying to find a way to express the movement of consciousness—Soul's movement from the human state to a spiritual state or one of the psychic states in between—the best word he could come up with at the time was bilocation. 1965 - Paul Mentions Sawan Singh? - May, 1965:

"These few who are following the ancient science do so loosely. However, Kirpal Singh, a living Guru, teaches the art (as) closely to the ancient teachings (as) possible, at his ashram in Old Delhi, India."

"The art of exteriorization was revived by Kabir, the Hindu mystic-poet in the sixteenth century and passed through a succession of savants, by secret initiation until Sawan Singh openly started giving initiation to anyone who came to his ashram. When he passed his spiritual mantle to Kirpal Singh, the instructions were to carry out this policy." [13]

*Trivia: "[....] I remember Sawan Singh's name being mentioned a number of times in very positive ways in the early days, but only occasional references to Kirpal because Paul had once studied with him. Also, Paul does actually mention Sawan Singh in one of his talks from 1966 [?], and indicates the line of mastership ended with him, meaning that he thought highly of Sawan Singh. [....]" [Doug?]

1965 - Paul Twitchell Letter / About L. Ron Hubbard - June 5th, 1965:

"Ron Hubbard was trying to get people out of their body with his HCA courses, but frankly, he was failing badly. When I was a staff member, occasions came up that I was asked to help some member of the graduating class to get a reality on out-of-body experiences... Hubbard would never acknowledge this ability of mine, and after leaving him I did a lot of experimenting."

1965 - Volcanic Activity / Guatemala  - July 1965: "Pacaya is a complex volcano constructed on the S rim of the 14 x 16 km Pleistocene Amatitlan Caldera. In 1565, the first recorded historical eruption from Pacaya caused ashfall for three days in Guatemala City. Following explosions in July and October 1965, Strombolian activity was generally continuous until March 1989 when explosive activity removed ~75 m of the MacKenney cone summit and enlarged the crater. Strombolian activity began again in January 1990 and has continued intermittently since then. This latest episode of activity, although smaller in terms of area impacted by tephra, is similar to the activity during July-August 1991, which again destroyed part of the cone and damaged towns W of the volcano. 1965 - Bilocation Advertisement - July / August 1965: In the July/August 1965 issue of Orion Magazine , Twitchell advertised "The Illuminated Way to God." It was one of his first such advertisements. It reads as follows:

Bilocation is the Illuminated Path of the Supreme Consciousness. It is the secret way that all masters use to reach the ultimate of all universes. One must learn the separation of spirit from body by his own volition. It increases awareness, helps solve problems and gives a spiritual insight into one's own akashic records and the hidden worlds. New techniques. For information, write: Paul Twitchell, P. O. Box 13052, San Diego, California 92113.

Later, Twitchell took out full page advertisements in Orion Magazine with his photograph and the headline caption, "ECKANKAR, The Secret Science of Soul Travel." Similar advertisements were also taken out in other occult magazines, including the New Cosmic Star.

1965 - Search Magazine / Paul Twitchell - September 1965: [....] The original article from which the mistake was made was published in the September 1965 issue of Search Magazine . It reads in part:

From Kabir's day those who have helped spread the doctrine of bilocation were mainly, the leader of the Sikh order, especially Nanka Guru [sic], the founder. Others have been the Sufi saints, e.g., Hafiz, Jalal din Rumi, Shamus Tabriz, and Sawan Singh, Kirpal Singh, St. Anthony of Padua, and the contemporary clergyman, Padre Pie [sic], to name a few.

The reprinted, "Can You Be in Two Places At The Same Time,"in the booklet Introduction to Eckankar , reads:

From Kabir's day, those who have helped spread the doctrine of Soul Travel were mainly the leaders of the Sikh order, especially Nanka Guru [sic], the founder. Others have been the Sufi saints, e.g., Hafiz, Jalal din'l Rumi, Shamus Tabriz, Sudar Singh, St. Anthony of Padua, and the contemporary clergyman, Padre Pio, to name a few.  [Paul Twitchell, Introduction to Eckankar (Las Vegas: Illuminated Way Press, 1966), pages 2-6.]

In the original article, Twitchell had mentioned Kirpal Singh three times; in the revised edition his name has been changed to read "Sudar Singh." The original reads:

Kirpal Singh who is still at his own ashram in India, has the ability to appear to his own people, in his Nuri Sarup body, no matter where they maybe. A skill which almost anybody can learn who gets the knack of bilocation. Among my numerous discourses from many gurus in the flesh and those on the inner planes, are those taken down when Kirpal Singh appeared in my apartment in Washington, D.C., in his light body, although his flesh self was six-thousand miles away in India.

The revised article, with name replacements, reads:

Sudar Singh, who lived in his ashram in India, had the ability to appear to his own people in his Atma Sarup body, no matter where they might be. A skill almost anyone can learn who gets the knack of Soul Travel. . . Among my numerous discourses from many gurus in the flesh and those on the inner planes, are taken down when Sudar Singh appeared in my apartment in New York City, in his light body, although his flesh self was six thousand miles away in India. *Trivia: "The path of ECKANKAR, which resulted out of my works published in European journals, has gained a wide following throughout the world. ECKANKAR was formed out of my own experiences with out-of-body travel." [Based on: ECKANKAR, Compiled Writings Volume 1, Paul Twitchell - Copyright 1975 by Gail T. Gross, p. 144]

*Trivia: "[....] This zany character's attitude of mind might be called the vanguard of a new religious thought. At least after I surfaced a different mystic belief called ECKANKAR, a Pali word for co-worker with God, did a lot of people start corresponding with me. This unorthodox philosophy received wide welcome among the European intellectual and college circles that followed the publication of my works in foreign magazines." [Based on: ECKANKAR, Compiled Writings Volume 1, Paul Twitchell - Copyright 1975 by Gail T. Gross, p. 146]

*Trivia: "[....] Following him [Sudar Singh] is Peddar Zaskq, who was born on a packetboat in the midst of the Missippi River, a few minutes after a great earthquake shook the mid-South and formed a great lake in this region. He became the Mahanta, the living ECK Master after studying under Rebazar Tarzs." [Based on: The Spiritual Notebook, by Paul Twitchell, 10th printing 1983, p. 195]

*Trivia: "The teachings of ECK, the high teachings, had been scattered to the four corners of the world. The different masters each had parts and pieces of it, but they attached little requirements, or strings, to it: You must be a vegetarian, or you have to meditate so many hours a day if you want to really be a true follower on the path to God. And this was wrong for our day and age. It was geared for another culture.
"Paul [Paul Twitchell] gathered up the whole teaching and took the best. Though it may be a strange thing to say, in this sense I see him as a master compiler. He gathered the golden teachings that were scattered around the world and made them readily available to us. So now we don't have to spend ten or fifteen years in an ashram in India, sitting around in the dust with the flies, or locked in a walled-up little cell to keep our attention from the outside world, in order to live the spiritual life... " [Based on: Harold Klemp, International Youth Conference, Las Vegas, NV, April 21, 1984] [See also: Dialogue in the Age of Criticism, Chap. 10]

*Trivia: "[....] Paul referred to Eckankar in many ways. At various times he called it a path, a mood, or a way of life. At other times he pointed out what ECK is not or stated that nothing could be said to describe It. But when corporate papers are being filed, the state officials want information about the organization. 'ECK is not like anything you've ever heard of before' is not considered an acceptable answer. So, in addition to Paul's mission to bring out the teachings of ECK and somehow establish them in the world, he was faced with the dilemma of how to define Eckankar for legal purposes. [....]" [Based on: Harold Klemp - See: Paul Defines Eckankar ]

*Trivia: "[....] Paul made it incredibly clear, stating it over and over again, that the writings represent only a small portion of the teachings of ECK. The majority of the path is an inward one, unique to each person, and that most of the training takes place within the experiences of one's own personal life, both on the inner and in the outer. Once contact with the spiritual current, known as the ECK, is established, the path begins to unfold on an individual basis. This is universally known by ECKists. The books and writings are mere hints. They are simply the ends of a thread, which we can follow back to their origin to understand their true meaning.
"Therefore, the matter of plagiarism, which David [David Lane] focuses on in chapter six, becomes much more to David than merely a matter of plagiarism. David uses it, rather, to try proving that ECKANKAR is an offshoot of his own teaching, Radha Soami. [....]"

*Tivia: [A request has been made for this article to be peer reviewed ....]

Eckankar, Religion of the Light and Sound of God emphasizes the value of personal experiences as the most natural way back to God. The current [2006] spiritual leader of Eckankar (since October 1981) is Sri Harold Klemp.

The teaching states that Eckists (students of Eckankar; also called chelas) must prove the veracity of the path for themselves, and gives specific Spiritual Exercises that teach individuals to leave their body, and journey into what is known as the "higher planes." Eckists believe it is possible to achieve self-realization and God-realization in this lifetime, and recommend that there is no better time than the present moment to experience God's divine love. The final spiritual goal of all Eckists is to become conscious co-workers with God.

[....]

Paul Twitchell stated that he had put Eckankar together from the scattered bits and pieces of other teachings, but it is fair to say that neither he nor any of his successors have ever publicly stated that he plagiarized the works of other authors. (It should be noted: In the context of the times, the usage and embellishment by an author of phrases from other religious and spiritual writers was not an uncommon event, as indeed it remains so today.)

1965 - Can You Be In Two Places At The Same Time? - 1965? "[....] Among my numerous discourses from many gurus in the flesh and those on in the inner places, are those taken down when Kirpal Singh appeared in my apartment in Washington, D.C, in his light body, although his flesh self was six thousand miles away in India. This is also true of Rebazar Tarzs, a Tibetian (sic) monk, who appears quite frequently in my house in San Diego. Last fall [1964?] he dictated a book-length manuscript called 'The Far Country.' His present abode is near Hindu Kush range in Afghanistan, where he has lived since the Chinese have take over his country.

"Last December [1964?] my wife and I arrived in San Diego, where we settled down, after wandering around the globe studying spiritual biometrics. I took up teaching a workshop in bilocation, at the California Parapsychology Foundation [March 26th, 1965?] as part of their research program, aside from my regular writing career..." 1966 - Paul Twitchell Meets Dr. Louis Bluth? - 1966? "My understanding is that Dr. Bluth was a follower of Radha Soami Satsang Beas, which means that after Sawan Singh died, Jagat Singh was the Guru for a short period and then Charan Singh became the Guru. The Beas group was opposed to Kirpal's splitting off and forming his own teaching. So, he would not have had any love lost over Kirpal. I believe Dr. Bluth first met Paul around 1966." 1966 - The Far Country Manuscript? - March 1966: "In this chapter [Chap. 9: A Journey to the 'Far Country'] we once again approach the mystery of The Far Country which we dealt with in Chapter One. Even though Mr. W.R. of New York claimed to have held the materialized volume in his hand and even to have browsed through its text in March of 1966, The Far Country remains in manuscript form, and the selection which I shall quote in this chapter will mark the remarkable book's first physical exposure to the printed page." 1966 - Paul Twitchell / Illuminated Way Letter - May 1966:

"Actually, Soul Travel is not a projection of the subtle bodies as one might think, but an expansion of awareness into those areas where we want to be. It has nothing to do with astral travel, which is a limited form of movement, nor with the mental body and other lower bodies wrapped about Soul in order to protect it in the lower worlds. We find that Soul can be as small as an acorn or as large as the whole universe, according to Its own desire. This being true, it puts us in the position of having as much space as we desire, with a three hundred and sixty degree vision. It is really up to us as to how much awareness we desire to have at any time - this is sometimes called being in all places at once with Total Awareness."

1966 - First Printed / The Flute of God - "The Flute of God, by Paul [Paul Twitchell], ... was first printed in bimonthly installments in 1966, in Orion Magazine." [See: Dialogue in the Age of Criticism, Chap. 2]

*Trivia:

Twitchell's enormous editing of names reached a pinnacle when he decided to publish in book form The Flute of God. The work was originally printed in installments in Orion Magazine, from 1965 to 1967. The first six chapters of the text profusely mention the names of Kirpal Singh, Sawan Singh, and Jesus Christ. When Twitchell had the book republished, however, he redacted every single mention of Kirpal Singh, Sawan Singh, and Swami Premananda. In some cases, he even edited out the name Jesus and replaced it with "Gopal Das" or other Eckankar Masters. And, although he quotes from the Christian Bible, he even changes the name of his source (to that of the Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad) while retaining the same biblical quote. Below is a comparison study of the two versions. Remember that the Orion version is the earliest, and that Twitchell's editing is primarily "name replacements."

The Flute Of God by Paul Twitchell as it appeared in installments in Orion Magazine. Chapter I - "In The Beginning" (March-April, 1966):

Par. 3: "I remember very well when Swami Premananda, of India, who has a Yoga church in Washington, D. C., said, 'When someone asked Bertrand Russell what his philosophy of Life was, he wrote several volumes of books on the subject."

The Flute Of God by Paul Twitchell as published by Illuminated Way Press (1970). Chapter I - "In The Beginning":

Par. 3: "I remember very well when Sudar Singh, the great Eck Master said, 'When someone asked Bertrand Russell what his philosophy of Life was, he wrote several volumes of books on the subject."

The Flute Of God by Paul Twitchell as it appeared in installments in Orion Magazine. Chapter I - "In The Beginning" (March-April, 1966):

Par. 15: "I have studied under many teacher [sic], and may yet have to study under more. Like Meher Baba, the Indian saint, who was said to have nineteen teachers to help him gain his place in the universe, I have so far had seven, some outstanding ones, including Sri Kirpal Singh, of Delhi, India."

The Flute Of God by Paul Twitchell as published by Illuminated Way Press (1970). Chapter I - "In The Beginning":

Par. 16: "I have studied under many ECK Masters only they have led me to the highest truth. Like Fubbi Quantz, the ECK saint, who was said to have nineteen teachers to help him gain his place in the universe, I have also had several, each outstanding, one being Sudar Singh of India."

The Flute Of God by Paul Twitchell as it appeared in installments in Orion Magazine. Chapter I - "In The Beginning" (March-April, 1966):

Par. 16: "Each has had a place in my growth toward the spiritual goal; each are equally great in their work for mankind. However, I have felt a closer kinship and friendliness to Kirpal Singh, who has shown me a lot of the other work during my first year or so under him. Since we have parted he keeps an impartial view toward me and my research. Therefore, if I quote him in these pages it is because I feel that he is sympathetic and interested in my work."

The Flute Of God by Paul Twitchell as published by Illuminated Way Press (1970). Chapter I - "In The Beginning":

Par. 17: "Each has had a place in my growth toward the spiritual goal; each is equally great in his work for mankind. However, I have felt a closer kinship and friendliness to Sudar Singh, who showed me a lot of the other work, during my first year or so under him. Since we have parted he has retained an impartial view toward me and my research. If I quote him in these pages it is because I feel that he is sympathetic and interested in my work and led me to Rebazar Tarzs."

The Flute Of God by Paul Twitchell as it appeared in installments in Orion Magazine. Chapter I - "In The Beginning" (March-April, 1966):

Par. 32: "Life fascinates me. Certain details of life to be worked out are strange. Lying on the bed late at night I watch the pattern of shadows weaving about the room. In the presence of familiar night visitors like Kirpal Singh, or Rebazar Tarzs, a Tibetan Lama, who come often in their Nuri-Sarup, or others, some strangers, some friends, I wonder about life."

The Flute Of God by Paul Twitchell as published by Illuminated Way Press (1970). Chapter I - "In The Beginning":

Par. 34: "Life fascinates me. Certain details of life that have to be worked out are strange. Lying on the bed late at night I watch the pattern of shadows weaving about the room. In the presence of familiar night visitors like Sudar Singh, or Rebazar Tarzs, the ECK Masters who come often in their Nuri-Sarup bodies, or others, some strangers, some friends, I wonder about life."

The Flute Of God by Paul Twitchell as it appeared in installments in Orion Magazine. Chapter II - "The Symbol of The Princes":

Par. 12: "Therefore, the principal (sic) involved here is: `We live and have our being in the Supreme Being.' Jesus said it in another way as `we move and have our being in God.' Other savants e.g., Jalalddin Maulana Rumi put it another way, `Divine Grace is not limited by the conditions of ability, but ability, in fact, is conditioned by Divine Grace.'"

The Flute Of God by Paul Twitchell as published by Illuminated Way Press (1970). Chapter II - "The Symbol of The Princes":

Par. 11: "Therefore, the principle involved here is,`We live and have our being in the Supreme Being.' Lai Tsi, the Chinese ECK Master, said it this way, `We live and move and have our being in the SUGMAD.' Other savants state it in a slightly different vein. For instance, Jalaluddin Maulana Rumi said, `Divine Grace is not limited by the conditions of ability - but ability, in fact, is conditioned by Divine Grace.'"

The Flute Of God by Paul Twitchell as it appeared in installments in Orion Magazine. Chapter II - "The Symbol of The Princes":

Par. 48: "This is what Kirpal Singh speaks of in his discourses. `We must become the conscious co-worker of God.' Meaning, of course, that once man is freed of his imbalances he inherits the throne and does his work for the whole."

The Flute Of God by Paul Twitchell as published by Illuminated Way Press (1970). Chapter II - "The Symbol of the Princes":

1966 - Paul Twitchell / Illuminated Way Letter - September 1966: [....] This is what Paul wrote in his Illuminated Way Letter, Dated September 1966:

From the moment when we start creating special points, ideas and distinctions, we exile ourselves from the state of God-Consciousness, and miss the infinite freedom of Reality...

The problem of saints within organized religions lies in the thought that once they have reached the formless - that of the true Kingdom of Heaven - they begin to make the mistake of putting themselves into the limitations of symbols and cherished opinions. All experiences of the mystics within religions have done this, and find themselves limited by the mind, which intervenes and creates tragic anxiety within the symbols of the adored formless vision and sound. Therefore, in spite of their lofty thoughts, they are able to penetrate only the limits of the mental plane where we find symbols, ideas and forms existing.

[....]" [Based on: Dialogue in the Age of Criticism, Chap. 10]

*Trivia: "This is what Paul wrote in his Illuminated Way Letter, Dated September 1966:

The Spiritual Travelers refuse to consider themselves as intermediaries between the Divine, the universal mind and man. Of course, they are the agents of God, but they will not allow themselves to be used by anyone to rely upon them as a support. The purpose is to teach every man to take his own responsibility and stand on his spiritual feet anywhere at anytime.

The attitude of ECKANKAR is the very independence of Soul...

Soul is the central reality of the individual; Soul of itself dwells in the Ultimate Cosmic Consciousness, God-Realization, at all times. Unless, of course, mind gets too strong and becomes wild and tries to pull it down to the lower levels of the universes. This is hardly possible, for when this happens, Soul withdraws and leaves mind to run the body, which it will do, but to the detriment of the physical body. Soul, being a happy entity, will not be controlled by anything other than the Holy Spirit...

1966 - Removed? / Kirpal Singh's Name - November 1966: "[....] Paul [Paul Twitchell] ran three or four chapters of The Flute of God in Orion magazine that contained Kirpal's [Kirpal Singh's] name. This continued until mid-1966. Then suddenly [in the November 1966 installment] none of the further chapters contained Kirpal's name. And suddenly all the books and materials written and printed by Paul after that no longer contain Kirpal's name." [Dialogue in the Age of Criticism, Chap. 11]

*Trivia: "... Paul did indeed decide, for some reason starting in mid-1966, to start replacing the names of his previous teachers. David's [David Lane's] claim that the Tiger's Fang incident triggered this, however, clearly doesn't hold water, and neither does his explanation that Paul made these changes before the founding of ECKANKAR, since there is not a single case before mid-1966 where this occurs. David didn’t realize this until I [Doug Marman] pointed it out.
"Then why did Paul suddenly change? Why, after Paul had been so open about crediting the teachers he had studied with up until 1966 – why would he decide to not only stop mentioning their names, but to also go back and edit their references out of his published materials? What is it that took place in mid-1966 that could have caused such a change?
"Well, it appears that there was an event that took place at this time. If you will remember, back in Chapter Three, I mentioned that Paul began a six-month series of workshops on the art of bi-location at the California Parapsychology Foundation, in San Diego. These lectures began in late 1965 and continued into early 1966. Near the end of this series, apparently Kirpal Singh sent out the copy of a letter to his American satsangis that described Paul's workshops at the Parapsychology Foundation and called Paul a fraud. (David wrote to me recently to suggest that it might have been Kirpal’s American representative who took it on himself to distribute this letter.) Is this the real trigger to Paul's sudden change of heart? I believe so." [Based on: Doug Marman: Dialogue in the Age of Criticism, Chap. 5]

MSIA has no quarrel with the dates, but denies that John-Roger ever really "joined" Eckankar, let alone received the "second initiation" and thus become technically an Eckankar initiate (the so called first initiation, not unlike AMORC's first Temple Degrees, does not require the physical presence of a minister of Eckankar). John-Roger only read Eckankar's literature and occasionally met with Twitchell. Most Eckankar students would receive their ("second") initiation during their second year of involvement in the movement. John-Roger, however, certainly did not devote his time exclusively, or even predominantly, to Eckankar during 1967-1968, nor does he acknowledge to have received any "initiation"[25]. [....]

*Trivia: "[....] There is another very significant element that Paul introduces into ECKANKAR. It is best understood by quoting Paul's own words from his Introduction to his book, The Tiger's Fang:

The book [The Tiger's Fang] came out of personal experience. What is written on these pages is not as important as the recording of those worlds that few Souls, other than saints, have ever visited.

Some will say this book is the wild fantasy of a highly developed imagination, but one must understand that there is nothing in the world of God without some degree of truth. Even fantasy is cast out of the material cloth of God, so how can fantasy be a complete untruth?

This statement should stagger the mind of man and shake the foundation of the teachings of orthodox religions, philosophies, and metaphysical concepts. However, I am prepared to make my statements out of pure experience and one must remember that all experiences are unique only to the experiencer.

"Although many have read this quote, I'm not sure everyone has understood what Paul is saying here. Paul says that The Tiger's Fang 'came out of personal experience.' He is not saying this book is a literal record. Paul is also saying that nothing is really made up in the imagination since all images are the reflections of some inner truth, and therefore fiction can come closer to truth than non-fiction.
"These are not the sayings of someone who cares about ritual and tradition or historical lineages. These are the sayings of someone who wants only to express that spiritual reality so that others can make inward contact in the greatest possible way, including the use of stories, journeys into the invisible worlds, love poetry, history from a spiritual perspective, or inner psychology for the seeker of God, as Paul's many books have displayed.
"This is not about a teaching that can be reduced to writing, as with many religions. Rather this is about expressions of a spiritual truth in the form of hints and clues that can connect us and align us to the inner realities themselves. Paul was doing exactly what he said we was doing; bringing the teachings of ECKANKAR out into the open from the inner worlds. He was putting clothes on the naked experiences of Soul. [....]"

*Trivia: "The entirety of God is so majestic and colossal that few in the flesh have any conception of how they might be brought closer to the Deity. We must learn to experience God through Soul. The master, or guru, may give one an experience of God through the emotional senses by striking the mental imagery that arouses the emotional body to great heights of ectasy. However, the guru prefers that the chela (student) find the way by his own individual effort.
"Those Souls and spiritual travelers (the latter is the higher name for Souls who are commonly called mahantas, gurus, and masters), whom I know personally in the worlds beyond, have great wisdom, mercy, and compassion for all mankind, except when man becomes stubborn in his ignorance. [....]"

*Trivia: "A teacher, or guru, may give you an experience of God through the emotional senses by striking the mental imagery that arouses the emotional body to great heights of ecstasy. However this is not likely for he prefers that you find the way by your own individual effort. So the guru will usually tell you how, and point all the ways, via the experiences in God, that you are striving to reach." [....]

"When a traveler speaks, we, in ignorance, think he speaks to the physical self. This is wrong. He addresses the Soul, not the mind nor the body, and awakens the Soul to its true destiny." [....]

*Trivia: 10.20 PAUL TWITCHELL: PSYCHIC TELEPORTATION?

Another possible source of corroboration for such a psychic process comes in the case of Paul Twitchell, whose supporters founded a metaphysical sect known as “Eckankar ”, which is now the subject of scrutiny and controversy. Some have accused it of having become a cult. We do not have enough experience with the group to form an opinion one way or the other -- but essentially any time people get together for a spiritual purpose, someone is going to accuse them of being a cult.

As reported in Brad Steiger‘s book The Enigma of Reincarnation, Twitchell‘s abilities came about as a result of going through the Nazi concentration camps as a youth. Due to the extreme conditions that he was placed under, he developed the ability to project out-of-body at will.

Later in his life he became well-known for his ability to do this, and like Edgar Cayce he also seemed to be able to access an “Akashic Record ” where he could obtain medical and past-life information for others. Interestingly, Steiger tells of the following case on page 107:

Twitchell‘s friends like to tell of the time when Paul was imprisoned in a South American jail because of a misunderstanding about his passport. To amuse himself and to confound his jailers, Twitchell appeared walking about in a downtown square while his physical body lay on a bunk in the jail cell.

As the seminars became regular, ongoing meetings, these 'long-distance' attendees were able to persuade John-Roger to begin holding seminars outside of Santa Barbara. *Trivia: "In 1968, John-Roger Hinkins, a Mormon and ex-high school teacher, started his spiritual ministry. He was associated with Paul Twitchell and Eckankar, having been a mail correspondent member, and, to Eckankar's records, a second initiate.
In several long, personal interviews with John-Roger at his house in Mandeville Canyon, I learned that he did not see his connection with Paul Twitchell as a master/disciple or teacher/student relationship. Be that as it may, the fact remains that his group and his teachings are almost exactly the same as Eckankar's, not even excepting particular Twitchellian nuances. It should also be noted that M.S.I.A.'s organizational structure is almost parallel to Eckankar's with regard to initiation, discourses, and cosmology.

But I was a friend, and I valued Paul Twitchell's friendship, and it is as a friend that I shall miss him. 1969 - "MAHANTA" Term Used - January 1st, 1969: See Paul Twitchell Wisdom Note for January 1st, 1969.

*Trivia:

The Mahanta is the foremost Spiritual Traveler in the Order of the Vairagi Adepts. He is the representative of God who can help Soul find spiritual freedom. The Mahanta is the Inner Master, keeper of the secret wisdom. He guards the temple of the heart, disclosing the hidden knowledge of those who dedicate their hearts to SUGMAD.
The holy scripture of ECK, The Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad, Book One, says this of him: "It is best not to make contact with the Living ECK Master in the physical but through the inner level, for all comes as the secret teachings from the heart of the Mahanta to each chela under his protection and guidance. This is the inner way and all who come unto the Mahanta shall be lifted up into heaven." [....]

They are in my book, and have been thoroughly discussed on alt.religion.eckankar and can be found in the records there. I would be glad to present them here as well, if anyone was interested. You asked: 'Why have you returned without answering the questions posed to you by site members in previous postings? When did Twitchell first write about the mahanta? Was it 1969 as one site member has stated?' I answered last time that I had just moved to a new home and my files were still packed in boxes. They are still packed in boxes, but a few are handy so I pulled out Paul's old Wisdom Notes and Illuminated Way Letters. You seem to be right. Paul didn't use the word, Mahanta, until the January 1969 Illuminated Way Letter and the February 1969 Wisdom Note [should read January]. Before then he mainly used, The Master, Spiritual Traveler, Teacher, etc. Not even the mention of Living ECK Master very often, although Outer Master and living Master were mentioned often. This is interesting. Thanks for pointing it out. [....]" [my brackets text - D.R.D.]

*Trivia: "[....] Such ways are not as perplexing as we are led to believe. Many Oriental teachers will tell you that it takes years to reach self-realization or God-realization, and that they, the masters, are the only channels by which it can be gained. Nothing can be further from truth, and though you learn much from the ECK masters, you will eventually give up all masters in a natural way. 1970 - Experience of "God Consciousness" / Harold Klemp - April, 1970?

Paul did have the experience of God Consciousness in 1957, but it took eight full years before he was ready for the mantle of the Mahanta in 1965. Even then he did not know all things, as the spiritually naive would like to think he did.
In my case, I had this experience of God in 1970. But then followed eleven years of the most difficult and exacting training as I made my way through the outer and inner initiations. It took that long to consolidate and "set" each higher level of initiation. [....]"

*Trivia: "[....] The reason Paul abandoned the profit company for bringing out the ECK teachings is that it offered no umbrella of protection for the initiates of local Satsangs to hold classes. *Trivia: "[....] This was also one of the reasons that Paul changed his perspective and turned Eckankar into a religion. He was well aware of the deceptions and fabrications in his writings. If he made Eckankar a religion, no one could legally question the truth of what he wrote for it would constitute religious dogma protected by the Constitution of the United States. If it were merely a non-profit organization, like HCS (Higher Consciousness Society), it would be subject to a much higher legal standard of truth. It has none of the legal protections that the dogma and myths of religions can look to for protection. That is also why Scientology became a religion. When you have something to hide, such as the truth behind your public story, there is no better protection than that provided by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. 1970 - Poisoned? / Paul Twitchell, Spain - September 1970?

Paul was a man given a most difficult mission. As evidenced by the fact that a disturbed person attempted to kill him with poison in September 1970 and the resulting illness he experienced in the final year of his life, Paul had little to gain materially from this mission. Yet right to the end, he continued to gather together and put out the teachings of truth.

*Trivia: "[....] In Paul's book, Dialogues with the Master, which was apparently written around 1956-57, Paul asks an inner master by the name of Rami Nuri about the meaning of the Master:

PAUL: "I wish to ask a question of you, Lord."

RAMI NURI: "I am not your Lord, but ask."

PAUL: "Is there such a being as MAHANTA?"

RAMI NURI: "Only as the manifested power... The God-Power can take any shape it desires. Usually, the Godman takes the shape of others in the inner cosmic worlds to appear to certain teachers, and devotees to give them the true Light."

PAUL: "If he appeared in his own form then they would either not know him, or perhaps would not believe."

RAMI NURI: "He appears to all ECK chelas as the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master and the Master to any of his disciples.
"He is in as many forms as he desires to be. He could appear to one or many in contemplation. He can appear as a thousand or even a million different forms to a million different people in contemplation at the same time...
"However, let us say this - those who do not see him in his true form as the Godman, Himself, will see him only as their teacher or guru, and to them he gives the inner teachings as only they, the disciples, can accept."

"While it is likely that Paul later added the ECK terms to this text before it was published in 1970, still the meaning is clear. And, finally Paul had to realize that with everything he had experienced, and with all his writings and creative expressions that he wanted to share, they could no longer fit with any of his previous teachings. He could find no home for those teachings with his past teachers. Therefore, ECKANKAR was something that would have to stand on its own. [....]"

*Trivia: "[....] In The Way of the White Clouds, by Lama Govinda, a book about Tibetan Buddhist teachers, you will find the exact description Paul used when approaching Lai Tsi's cave in The Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad. In Walter Russell's book, The Secret of Light, you can hear the words of Brahm speaking to you, just like the words Brahm spoke in The Tiger's Fang. Read Darkness and the Deep, by Vardis Fisher, and you will see the origin of creation as Paul wrote about it in the Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad. A book by Edouard Schure, called The Great Initiates contains some of the same sweeping historical overview as The Spiritual Notebook. Manly Palmer Hall's Karma and Reincarnation covers the whole subject of nidanas that you will find in The ECK Vidya. Besides these, there are a few pages in The Varieties of Religious Experience, by William James, some sections from Ouspensky's The Fourth Way and In Search of the Miraculous, passages from Neville Goddard's The Power of Awareness and Awakened Imagination, and even The Bible has been a source for Paul. Lai Tsi's contemplation seed in the Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad looks very similar to one of the Psalms [....]. [Based on: http://www.littleknownpubs.com/Dialog_Ch_Six.htm]

1970s - "Cover" Names Alleged? / Eckankar - 1970s: "[....] Eckankar has also had a long history of trying to come to grips with its Radhasoami roots. In the 1970s a number of scholars alleged that Twitchell tried to cover-up his association with previous real-life gurus by creating 'cover' names. For instance, in his earlier publications for such magazines as Orion, Psychic Observer, and Search, Twitchell profusely mentions the names of Sawan Singh, Kirpal Singh, and other well known spiritual leaders. However, after he started Eckankar he redacted those names when he reprinted his earlier articles in new books. Twitchell did not change the story or the text, as such, but rather switched names: from Kirpal Singh to 'Sudar' Singh; from Swami Premananda to 'Rebazar Tarzs'; from the Holy Bible to 'The Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad.' What Twitchell was attempting to do is fairly obvious: he was trying to rewrite his biography so that it could dovetail with the antiquity of Eckankar's rich (if invented) mythology. In doing so, however, Twitchell had to deny his Radhasoami roots. Why? Because Twitchell wanted Eckankar to be an autonomous tradition which stood apart from his shabd yoga cousins. The only glitch, however, is that it was these very cousins which informed and shaped Eckankar's theology.  [....]"

*Trivia:

In the 1970's, the International Headquarters of Eckankar vehemently denied that their founder was ever initiated by the late Kirpal Singh, or that Twitchell considered the Ruhani Satsang adept a Master. In pursuance of Eckankar's official stand on this issue, I sent a letter of inquiry to their headquarters in Menlo Park. Below are excerpts of what I received:

"Kirpal Singh and the Radha Swoami [sic] tried to "claim" Paul Twitchell and use him for their own purposes, as have other groups from the East and West. Paul mentioned this several times and at one point wrote a letter to Kirpal Singh and his associates stating that he, Paul, would take Singh and his associates to court if necessary. Due to the threats and harassment and material Kirpal Singh and Mr. Khanna tried to use against Paul Twitchell by faking Paul's signature on many papers. Paul wrote that letter that his widow, Gail Twitchell, gave me permission to read. . . " [20]

[18] Refer to the appendices for more on this controversy of "name replacements."

[19] I owe this information to David Stewart, who served as both Editor of the Eck World News and consulting Editor for Illuminated Way Press. He personally worked on the editing of Letters to Gail, enabling him to see the original, untampered manuscript.

[20] Bernadine Burlin, op. cit.

It is obvious from the above extract that Eckankar strongly denies their founder's involvement with Ruhani Satsang. Their position, however, on Kirpal Singh's alleged forging of Twitchell's signature on "many papers" is without any documentary basis. Neither has Darwin Gross or Gail Atkinson (also initiated by Kirpal Singh) adequately explained why if Twitchell was never a follower of Kirpal Singh did he state both in articles and in letters that he was? A paradigm for the whole matter comes from one of Eckankar's first "proto-advertisements." In 1965, a few months prior to Eckankar's official inception, Twitchell distributed his "Bilocation Sheet." It reads:

PAUL TWITCHELL PRESENTS:

New Concepts on the Ancient Teachings of Bilocation
Paul Twitchell, author, traveler, and lecturer gives a new

presentation of the ancient art of bilocation, out-of-body
experiences, in a series of public lectures. . .
He has studied under Swami Premananda, Self
Realization

Order, Washington, and Kirpal Singh to name a few. [21]

The full impact of Ruhani Satsang and its parent Radha Soami Satsang Beas on the teachings of Eckankar are not fully appreciated until one understands the connection between the writings of Julian P. Johnson and Paul Twitchell's. Without a thorough understanding of Twitchell's sources, Eckankar's origins will remain a mystery. The one person who had undoubtedly the greatest effect on Twitchell's own spiritual life was Kirpal Singh of India. But the one person who had the most pivotal influence on Twitchell's writings was a Kentuckian - Julian P. Johnson.

[21] I must thank Edward Pecen for this startling finding; he has been a key source for a number of rare and important documents.

They may not enter into the public stream of thought but by speaking to their friends and perhaps a group in ECK they spread dissatisfaction and unhappiness. I have never announced yet who would be taking my place as the MAHANTA, but there are a few who have proposed to do so, but this means only one who has not come out of his childhood yet. Meanwhile it may be necessary only to appoint an ECK Master in the interim who will not be a MAHANTA, nor the Living ECK Master, but who will serve only during the period when the next MAHANTA reaches maturity.

The next MAHANTA is about fifteen years away. He is now in training but where he is nobody knows and won't know for a long time yet. Meanwhile, I am serving as the MAHANTA, the Living ECK Master, until the time comes to appoint an ECK Master who may serve in the interim until the next MAHANTA is appointed.

*Trivia: "[....] Following the January seminar [1971?], Paulji and I [Patti Simpson] settled into the pattern which would last until his translation (the term used in ECKANKAR for death). I was editing and writing for two publications. In addition, I was working on gathering data for his new biography. Whenever we had a meeting, whether it was lunch, in his office, or at a seminar, I had my tape recorder monitoring him. Several times when I did not have it, he would begin to tell stories that were autobiographical. We decided that since one never knew when these things would come tumbling out, it was better to leave the recorder running nonstop. In the beginning the tape recorder seemed to make him a bit self-conscious and somewhat ill at ease, but gradually he became accustomed to it and recognized its usefulness. Before he translated, he himself was making sure someone had the recorder going, even when I was not around. [....]" [Based on: Paulji A Memoir, by Patti Simpson, 2nd Printing: 1986, pp. 151-152]

1971 - Trivia / Paul Twitchell - March, 1971: "[....] I want to get a book out a month for the next two years if I can last that long [emphasis added]. I've got the material. It's already laying there. All I have to do is edit it. I've got four manuscripts now that are sitting there, and I've got three typewriters going, [a new manuscript] in each one of these. I ease up, maybe about every 20 minutes, and go to another typewriter and type a little bit, for maybe another 15 minutes, and then to another one and type another 15 minutes. Then I go over and start editing a book, and then in the meantime I'm writing letters. So, you see, the communication we have [now] is in the book field, but in the field of electronics, through radio, television and music, we haven't even scratched the surface in these things, and on the whole we haven't scratched the surface of ECK yet."

*Trivia: [....] "Just to back my comments up a bit more, here is another quote from Paul. This also comes from the Youth Training Council meeting in March 1971. I should mention that Ed Pecen, who lived in Illinois at the time (a long way from Paul's home, which might seem odd for a 'personal bodyguard') was present at this meeting with over twenty others, any of which could also be considered Paul's confidantes as much if not more than Ed Pecen:

We've had a lot of people who have made claims, now not only one, but two, four and five, and the reports come to me quite frequently that they're going be the next Mahanta, or they're already the Mahanta. Well, there will always be, in paraphrasing the Bible, the false prophets who make these claims.

Now, there is the whole of the worlds of the worlds, and in the center is the supreme Self or the supreme Reality as it flows out in waves, like the beams coming off of a radio station, going out into life and then returning. As it goes out, life is built and sustained. Then it returns as a wave and brings all life back to the center again.

This is the essence, this is the ECK Itself. And when one enters into this, and becomes this of Itself, then he has entered into this state of consciousness. And I say that there are some within the field of ECKANKAR who are coming close to this state, and they will come close to this state before they reach the end of this life. I have not declared myself in stating who's becoming the next ECK Master, but I will say this, generally there is a Mahanta for about every 50 to100 years. They don't come back one following upon the other. Or, I would say longer than that, maybe 150 or 200 years, that there will be another one here. In the meantime there will be an ECK Master who will take over, and probably two, maybe three, in the meantime before the next Mahanta will come.

"As you can see, the time frame is not at all clear and Paul is not pretending that it is. He is simply saying that there is a difference between one who is the Mahanta and the interim ECK Master (or Masters) that will follow Paul before the next Mahanta appears. He also said that there were some in ECKANKAR who would come close to this state. This is all a far cry from the interpretations that David [David Lane] has made, and actually shows that Paul was preparing the ECKists for what was to come. [....]"

1971 - Trivia / The Next Mahanta? - May 1st, 1971: "[....] In other words, if there was any controversy, it was created by those who boasted that they would be the next Mahanta. And that is exactly the issue that Paul was addressing.

      David continues:

   C. Lydon Harrell, Jr., Twitchell's attorney, signed a letter dated May 1, 1971, on his letterhead, addressed to the chelas, that once again states that the next Mahanta is a child and won't be ready for fifteen years.

"Let's take a look at what David left out of that letter. C. Lydon Harrell's letter begins like this:

In order to clarify some of the misinformation which is being given out about ECKANKAR and the MAHANTA, Sri Paul Twitchell, the Living ECK Master, the following is given:

ECKANKAR, the Ancient Science of Soul Travel, is not affiliated with any other organization under any other name than its own, and any claim made by anyone to this effect is false.

Sri Paul Twitchell is the only MAHANTA and Living ECK Master. He does not work with, nor speak through anyone in a trance state. In no way does he use the lower psychic worlds to give messages or initiations. Therefore, any messages claimed by anyone to be from the MAHANTA are false, and should be treated as such...

ECK Discourses, books, tapes, and all other writings are copyrighted and are authorized to be used only through the ECK Satsang Groups of ECKANKAR, itself. The use of these materials by anyone else under any other names, or the followers, thereof, makes them subject to libel.

"If you are wondering what spurred Paul into writing this letter [Illuminated Way Letter, January 1971], here is a quote from his talks in the book, Difficulties of Becoming the Living ECK Master, page 161-162:

Now, we had one man...This fellow takes every discourse we have, then he gets all the ECK books and he gets himself initiated up to the Second. Then he goes out and starts his own group, see? He had a meeting every night and he would give what they called aura-balancing or adjusting.

I thought this was awfully funny. I sent some people in to see him and hear him. He was having kind of a seance every night. He was saying, "Well, Brother Paul's here. Brother Paul's going to talk to us now." Then he was saying that I had lunch with him about twice a month asking him if we could join organizations, see...

There were two women who came up from Santa Barbara and one says, "Oh, we're ECK students." I said, "You are?" She says, "Yeah, we're studying under Roger Hinkins." See, this fellow who had taken all of this and stolen it from us...and this thing was building up because he was using us to build his organization.

So I wrote him a letter and said, "Stop now!" And he didn't pay much attention to that. Then I told the attorney, I said, "Stop him." The attorney wrote him a letter.

*Trivia:

Before Twitchell's Death
The controversy surrounding Eckankar began in the early 1970's shortly before Twitchell's death. Some individuals questioned the source of his teachings and he claimed that others had threatened his life due to their disagreement with his doctrines. "Twitchell claimed that he did not borrow ideas from any human source but experienced his own 'God-realization' in 1956 and was initiated by a group of Spiritual masters called 'The Order of Vairagi Masters' as the Living Eck Master in 1965." This however did not end the controversy.

Darwin Gross, the 972 nd Eckmaster
The controversy continued following Twitchell's death in 1971 with the new Living Eckmaster Darwin Gross. After an intense struggle for power within Eckankar between 1981 and 1983, Gross was stripped of all his authority and succeeded by Harold Klemp. Gross began his group, The Ancient Teachings of the Masters (ATOM) and claimed he was not starting a new teaching but was merely continuing to spread the teachings of Paul Twitchell. Eckankar banned his use of any trademarked Eckankar terminology. Gross is still considered the 972nd Eckmaster, but his picture is not posted in the Temple of Eck and he is not mentioned in discussion of previous masters.

[Q]: Too much fakery and commercialism?

[M]: Yes, yes. Too much propaganda. I tell you, one American was initiated by me - I've got the initiation report in his own handwriting. Then he wrote to me, "The Master's Form appears to me inside." That Form used to speak to him, dictate to him, inside. And all that dictation was put into a book and the manuscript was sent to me in 1963. Then later on he started a new religion.

[Q]: Yes. I've heard of him.

[M]: Later he sent me another letter, "Return my book." That is what such - like people will do. They had some little thing, and got stuck fast there. Now he's carrying on propaganda. He says he was never initiated by me. He was initiated in 1955. Some people get stuck fast on the way. This little ego is very difficult to get rid of unless there's some kind of protection. This is a living example. I need not mention his name.

[Q]: I don't think he mentions Your name either.

[M]: I don't think he would. I don't like to say things about anyone. If any man does well, all right. I returned the book. That was dictated by me, and that's all right. He changed that book before printing; where he mentioned my name, he changed it to another guru's name. So such is the fate of these people. People are fed up with these masters, gurus, and sadhus. 1971 - Trivia / Paul Twitchell & Kirpal Singh -

"I have never recognized you as a master, or that you give initiations, and that your work is not in the best interest of spirituality. Your teachings are orthodox, and as a preacher you are not capable of assisting anyone spiritually." -Paul Twitchell, 1971

[....]

The inherent contradictions in Twitchell's denial of his association with Kirpal Singh were too blatant for some Ruhani Satsang initiates to ignore. Several knowledgeable disciples began to give out the actual details of Twitchell's involvement with Kirpal Singh. Even the Ruhani Satsang Master himself commented [September 11th, 1970? See reference link.] on Twitchell's unusual actions:

"Yes, Yes. Too much propaganda. I tell you one American was initiated by me--I've got the initiation report in his own handwriting. That is what such-like people will do. They had some little thing, got stuck fast there. Now he's carrying on propaganda. He says he was never initiated by me. He was initiated in 1955. Some people get stuck fast on the way. This little ego is very difficult to get rid of unless there's some kind of protection. This is a living example. He has written other books. I need not mention his name. " [14]

[....] [14] Kirpal Singh, Heart To Heart Talks, Volume One, page 53.

It is unclear how Twitchell finally heard of Kirpal Singh's comments about him. Nevertheless, by whichever means he heard (through tape, letter, or word of mouth), the fact remains that Twitchell was highly displeased. The reason why is obvious: if word got out that Paul had indeed been initiated by Kirpal Singh but was denying it, it would imply that the founder of Eckankar was lying; and a master who would lie (or deceive or cover-up) is to many spiritual seekers no master at all. Thus, in a strange but predictable maneuver, Twitchell sent a letter bombasting Kirpal Singh, denying that he was initiated by him, and threatening - totally without legal basis - a lawsuit if Kirpal Singh pressed the matter any further.

Around the time that Kirpal Singh received the portending letter from the founder of Eckankar, Paul Twitchell died unexpectedly from a heart attack. [15] It was a curious turn of events, for Twitchell departed only months after claiming that he would live at least another five years - if not fifteen.

[15] A copy of the letter that Paul Twitchell sent to Kirpal Singh shortly before his death is still in the possession of Gail Atkinson. According to several Ruhani Satsang initiates who were present in India when Twitchell's letter was received at Sawan Ashram, Kirpal Singh made the following comment: "We are all born with a large noose around our neck. He hasn't much rope left." Shortly thereafter Twitchell died.

*Trivia: "[....] In Paul's last words before his death, at the Cincinnati Seminar, as recorded in the book, Difficulties of Becoming The Living ECK Master, pages 134-135, he said:

A lot of the impressions that I first set out in my first work, I'm having to go back and redo these things and try to correct them. I'm like the fellow who felt his way along in a college course. They told him he had to write a book in order to keep in the work, and he didn't know what to say. He had to go and he had to do something, but when he did, he got it all wrong. And by getting it all wrong, ten years from there, he had to go back and correct his book and rewrite it, and nobody believed him because they were believing the first impression of what he made. And this is the position I'm in.

"If you follow what is being described here, you will see that in all these ways Paul was choosing associations. He was trying to avoid or remove associations that carried preconceived connotations and replace them with new terms that could act as symbols and clear channels, making it easier for others to connect with the Reality that our language does not have words for.
"In doing all this, Paul was bringing to ECKANKAR a freedom from past traditions while incorporating the elements from them that were vital. The concept of spiritual lineage was important, but the restrictions, traditions and worship that go along with physical lineage was not. Therefore, Paul described the spiritual line of ECK Masters, not for its historical accuracy based upon historical records, but to show that as the Sufis say there is always one who is the spiritual Pole of the world, and this light has passed from continent to continent, from race to race, from culture to culture, down through time.
"Therefore, when Kirpal changed his attitude toward Paul, and Paul began to remove Kirpal's name from his writings, replacing it with Sudar Singh or Rebazar Tarzs, Paul also began to see a whole new direction for his teaching of ECKANKAR. It was one wholly connected to an inner source, not tied to history or tradition, or even his own past. [....]"

Note: The following information does NOT necessarily represent the official view(s) of Eckankar

*Trivia: "[....] Just before Paul's death, a lot of planning and forethought was being done by Paul to prepare Eckankar for the next decade. The 60's were gone and people were growing it seemed in different directions in their thoughts about God. Eckankar was built around the concept that it would change with the people. The teaching would basically be the same but the delivery would have to have a constant flow of change. This could be observed from the early 60's to the 70's how much the terms were streamlined, how the explanations of the teachings were departing from the old way of delivery to a more universal way of expression. Though there were only about 5,000 Eckist at this time Paul could see the potential growth exploding if the right marketing was created. Paul did not make all the decisions, he had a team of people who gave their input and ideas. These ideas were implemented only after all sides of the idea were discussed. [....] Using the persona of Rebazar was decided by Gail and a few top people in the organization. [....] Gail, knowing it was up to her to save this child of Paul's, made a calculated decision that absolutely floored dozens of the HI's and the people in the office staff. Inspired by her own discussions with Paul, and possibly her own feelings she came up with the inspired concept that Paul told her who was to be the next Master in a dream. Who could dispute it? She was the Wife of the Master, she was an HI and respected in her own right as a Spiritual Traveler. Well the fireworks went off prior to the announcement and from this several HI's departed Eck. But before they left they strongly stated their opinions about Paul, Darwin, and what the future of Eck was going to be. [....] Gail knew the devise that Paul used to create the concepts of the Eck Master, and the Mahanta. She knew how Paul had used others books to copy from in creating some of his works. But she also knew that Paul did this for a reason and that the only thing that really mattered was getting the Light and Sound into the consciousness of the world. Don't ever think that it did not bother her as to how it was done. [....] Running the Eck Centers was a pure joy, the funds that were raised were for our Center not for the organization. There were no RESA'S to report to on every single event that we thought up during our business meetings. We talked freely of anything that came across our minds. We set up Potlucks, picnic's, mini-seminars, Days of Eck and a host of other events all within our specifications as to what we thought would represent Eck to others. [....] When Gail and Darwin announced their divorce it was like someone had hit you in the chest Hard! How could this happen? From this event questions began to surface, the downfall of Eck was just starting to raise its ugly head. What really happened is quite simple, Darwin found out the truth about Paul and his teachings. He discovered the device that he as the Mahanta was created from. This was Darwin's betrayal. His Master was no longer the great Paul who had always been there for him. Now he knew the truth! Darwin began to realize how the mind works with regard to creating him as the Godman, all the things that you read in the earlier chapters were now becoming apparent to Darwin. This was the reason for Gail and him breaking up. Darwin could not handle that he was a normal person and not the GODMAN that we had made him out to be. To go into all the problems that this raised with him and Gail would be crazy, and speculation. The 'truth,' is ultimately what destroyed their relationship. [....]"

*Trivia: [....]  I remember, however, Gail describing how many times she had told Paul that he needed to select his successor before he died - that she wasn't going to be put in a position where she or anyone else should have to make such a decision. Gail told Paul quite clearly that this was Paul's job and if he didn't take care of it before he left this world, well, that was just too bad, because she certainly wasn't going to make the selection.
"Paul apparently did make a list, a short list, of those who were potential successors. But he did not make a final choice before he died. This put Gail in a very awkward position.
"She began to get calls from a few of the prominent leaders, such as the ECKANKAR office manager and Dr. Bluth. *Trivia: "[....] Sri Darwin Gross, the Living ECK Master of the time, chosen by his successor Sri Paul Twitchell received the Rod Of Power October 1971. He is alive and well and continues assisting those individuals who ask for help in attaining Self and God Realization. [....]"

*Trivia: "[....] In 1971, when I [Darwin Gross] was chosen to lead the organization, it's net worth was considerably less than $50,000. The organization's finances flourished during the decade which followed. In 1981 we had a liquidation value in excess of $35,000,000. Circumstances have greatly changed over subsequent years however. *Trivia: "Although Gross was selected by the board of Eckankar as well as Twitchell's widow, he brought controversy to Eckankar because many followers felt he was an unworthy successor to the former ECK Master. Ultimately, Gross lost all of the powers and responsibilities associated with the title of Living ECK Master and was succeeded by Harold Klemp [1981], the 973rd and present [2005] living ECK Master. Gross and Eckankar became involved with a number of lawsuits disputing Gross's use of copyrighted Eckankar terminology." [See link: ]

*Trivia: "[....] Now it is true that a number of prominent leaders in ECKANKAR [Dr. Bluth & Dr. Wigglelsworth] left shortly after Darwin was announced as the next Master, and the shift that took place was a significant one, even though it probably only represented perhaps 3-4% of the whole membership. But from what I can see, this is simply something that commonly takes place after a successor is appointed. Almost every case of succession amongst the Radhasoami lines of Masters, of which David Lane is quite familiar, shows this clearly, as well as with many other groups. In fact, similar changes take place at the tops of most large corporations when there is a change in leadership. [....]" [Based on: Doug Marman, Dialogue in the Age of Criticism, Chap. 4]

*Trivia: "[....] More people have left ECKANKAR as it has moved from phase to phase than any other reason. From their perspective, ECKANKAR had changed and was no longer the same.
"Indeed it has changed, and continues to. Some left when ECKANKAR passed into its second phase, under Darwin, because they felt it had lost its spirit of individuality. Others left after entering the third phase under Harold, because they felt the loss of the wild and spontaneous growth. The last thing they wanted was to be part of an organization. *Trivia:

"Sri Darwin Gross, the Living Eck Master of Eckankar has stated that he knows for a fact that Paul Twitchell only had two Eck Masters during his earthly stay here; the Tibetan Rebazar Tarzs and Sudar Singh, and no one else. They were the only Masters to initiate Paul Twitchell."

--Bernadine Burlin, Personal Secretary to Darwin Gross [16]

"I have personally seen the name "Kirpal Singh" crossed out in the manuscript form of Letters to Gail. The name "Sudar Singh" was written above it. I believe that Gail did the editing."

--Former Editor of the ECK World News [17]

[16] Bernadine Burlin, op. cit.

[17] David Stewart, personal telephone interview with the author in 1977. I should add that David Stewart was under severe pressure not to talk with me or see me. I remember vividly when Brother Joseph Connell, President of Moreau High School, and myself went to Eckankar's international headquarters for a friendly chat with David Stewart. Mr. Stewart was very shaken and fearful when we met him at the headquarters; apparently he was frightened of losing his job and being the subject of harassment. I never saw David Stewart again. Weeks after talking with me, David Stewart "resigned" from his position and went back to Texas.

1971 - Formally Incorporated / MSIA - 1971: "[....] MSIA developed out of a series of six seminars held at the home of Muriel Engle in Santa Barbara, California. The first seminar took place on May 4, 1968. Across the course of six evenings, the audience was modest. Attendance ranged from 13 to 30 persons, depending upon the evening.
"A number of people who came to the early seminars drove from other cities in southern California. As the seminars became regular, ongoing meetings, these 'long-distance' attendees were able to persuade John-Roger to begin holding seminars outside of Santa Barbara. This expansion of J-R's activities continued until he was doing five seminars a week at different homes in different cities. The Church of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness was formally incorporated three years later, in 1971. [....]"

*Trivia: "Paul Twitchell claimed that his book, The Far Country (written in the late 1960's), was dictated to him by Tibetan Master, Rebazar Tarzs. The work, however, was almost entirely copied from the early books of Julian P. Johnson and L. Ron Hubbard. Over four-hundred paragraphs alone of The Far Country were directly taken from Johnson's two books: With a Great Master in India (copyright 1933) and The Path of the Masters (copyright 1939). There are many more words, sentences, and even paragraphs which Twitchell borrowed from Johnson's books, but I have only given a list of those examples which quite clearly display Twitchell's plagiarism. Below is a paragraph rundown: [....]"

*Trivia: "[....] However, Twitchell did not keep the Beas cosmology intact for long. In the late 1960s he began making changes which dramatically altered the sounds, lights, deities, and function of the various planes, even though it contradicted his previous charts as given in The Dialogues with the Master, The Tiger's Fang and The Far Country. Most initiates of Eckankar are unaware of the alterations. The following is the revised version given in the 1971 text, The Spiritual Notebook, and which is today the standard cosmology for all Eckists in the world: ... [....]"
