2011 - Could Dirt help Heal the Climate? - May 1st, 2011: "If Ohio State University soil scientist Rattan Lal is right, one of the simplest solutions to climate change may be right under our feet. With the right stewardship, Lal says, the agricultural soils of the world have the potential to soak up 13 percent of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere today - the equivalent of scrubbing every ounce of CO2 released into the atmosphere since 1980. [....] For millions of years, a natural partnership between plants and soil microbes has helped regulate carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. During photosynthesis, plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air and transform it into sugars, carbohydrates, and other carbon-based molecules. Some of those carbon products transfer from the roots to symbiotic fungi and soil microbes, which store the carbon in soil as humus. [NP] The invention of agriculture some 10,000 years ago disrupted these ancient soil-building processes. When humans started draining and plowing up the natural topsoil for planting, they exposed the buried carbon to oxygen, creating carbon dioxide and releasing it into the air. Animal husbandry made things worse, as domesticated animals began grazing grasslands down to the earth. In places wehere the ground is bare - from overgrazing or from the common practice of leaving fields unplanted for part of the year - photosynthesis stops. and so does the storage of carbon in the soil. Lal calculates that land use changes such as these have stripped 70 billion to 100 billion tons of carbon from the world's soils and pumped it into the earth's atmosphere, oceans, and lakes since the dawn of agriculture. Today agriculture and other land-use changes account for about a third of global greenhouse gas emissions. 2011 - Audit targets drugs for demmentia - May 12th, 2011: "Nearly one in seven elderly nursing home residents, nearly all of them with dementia, are given powerful atypical antipsychotic drugs even though the medicines increase the risks of death and are not approved for such treatments, a government audit found. [NP] More than half of the antipsychotics paid for by the federal Medicare program in the first half of 2007 were 'erroneous,' the audit found, costing the program $116 million for those six months. [NP] 'Government, taxpayers, nursing home residents as well as their families and caregivers should be outraged and seek solutions,' Daniel R. Levinson, inspector general of the Department of Health and Human Services, wrote in announcing the audit results. [NP] Levinson noted that such drugs - which include Risperdal, Zyprexa, Seroquel, Ability and Geodon - are 'potentially lethal' to many of the patients getting them and that some drug manufacturers illegally marketed their medicines for these uses 'putting profits before safety.' [NP] The audit is an unusual assessment by the government of whether doctors are treating Medicare patients appropriately in nursing homes. Levinson suggested that the government should collect information on the diagnosis given medicare patients so that the government can assess whether the drugs prescribed to them are appropriate. [NP] While common in the private sector, such basic oversight is unheard of in the Medicare program and would almost certainly be opposed by doctors' groups and many in Congress who view government intrusions into the doctor-patient relationship as inappropriate. In response to the audit, the Centers for Medicare and Medical Services said that some of the inappropriate use of antipsychotics in elderly nursing home patients is a result of drugmakers' paying kickbacks to nursing homes to increase prescriptions for the medicines. [NP] Omnicare Inc., a pharmacy chain for nursing homes, paid $98 million in November 2009 to settle accusations that it received kickbacks from Johnson & Johnson and other drugmakers for antipsychotic prescriptions. [NP] Medicare officials said that diagnosis information is not generally included with prescriptions so the government cannot access in real time whether prescription payments are appropriate. [NP] While the Food and Drug Administration has warned doctors that using antipsychotic drugs in elderly patients with dementia increases their risks of death, doctors continue the practice because they have few other good choices, said Dr. Daniel J. Carlat, editor-in-chief of The Carlat Psychiatry Report, a medical education newsletter for psychiatrists. [NP] 'Doctors want to maximize quality of life by treating the patient's agitation even if that means the patient will die a bit sooner,' Carlat said." The rare storm has been wreaking havoc for months and shooting plumes of gas high into the planet's atmosphere. [NP] 'Nothing on Earth comes close to this powerful storm,' says Leigh Fletcher, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, and lead author of a study that appeared in this week's edition of Science Magazine. 'A storm like this is rare. This is only the sixth one to be recorded since 1876, and the last was way back in 1990.' Cassini's radio and plasma wave science instrument first detected the large disturbance in December 2010, and amateur astronomers have been watching it ever since through backyard telescopes. As it rapidly expanded, the storm's core developed into a giant, powerful thunderstorm, producing a 3,000-mile-wide (5,000-kilometer-wide) dark vortex possibly similar to Jupiter's Great Red Spot.
