2007 - Revival? / Ancient Pagan Religion, Athens, Greece - January 22nd, 2007: "ATHENS, GREECE *

A small group of pagans honored Zeus at a 1,800-year-old temple in the heart of Athens on Sunday [01/21/07] - the first known ceremony of its kind held there since the ancient Greek religion was outlawed by the Roman empire in the late 4th century.
Twenty worshippers gathered next to the ruins of the temple [Temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens] for a celebration organized by Ellinais, a year-old group based in Athens that is campaigning to revive old religious practices from the era when Greece was a font of education and philosophy.
The group ignored a ban by the Culture Ministry, which declared the site off limits to any kind of organized activity, to protect the monument. But participants did not try to enter the temple itself, which is closed to everyone, and no officials sought to stop the ceremony.
Dressed in ancient-style costumes, worshippers standing near the temple's imposing Corinthian columns recited hymns calling on the Olympian Zeus, "King of the gods and the mover of all things," to bring world peace.
"Our meggase is world peace and an ecological way of life in which everyone has the right to education," said Kostas Stathopoulos, one of the three high priests overseeing the event, which celebrated the nuptials of Zeus and hera, the goddess of love and marriage.
To the ancient Greeks, ecological awareness was fundamental, Stathopoulos said after a priestess, with arms raised to the sky, called on Zeus "to bring rain to the planet."
For the organizers, who follow a calendar marking time from the first  Olympiad in 776 B.C., the ceremony was far more than a simple re-enactment.
"We are Greeks, and we demand from the government the right to use our temples," said high priestess Doreta Peppa.
Most Greeks are baptized Orthodox Christians, and the church rejects ancient religious practices as pagan. Church officials have refused to attend flame ceremony re-enactments at Olympia before the olympic Games because Apollo, an ancient god of light, is invoked.
Ellinais was founded last year and has 34 official members, most of them academics, lawyers and other professionals. It won a court battle for state recognition of the ancient Greek religion and is demanding that the government register its offices as a place of worship, a move that could allow the group to perform weddings and other rites.
Christianity rose to prominence in Greece in the 4th century after Roman Emperor Constantine's conversion. Emperor Theodosius wiped out the last vestige of the Olympian gods when he abolished the Olympic games in A.D. 394. Several isolated pockets of pagan worship lingered as late as the 9th century.
"The Christians shut down our schools and destroyed our temples," said Yiannis Panagidis, 36, an accountant, who participated in the ceremony.

2007 - CIA Leak Case Trivia / Judith Miller & I. Lewis Libby - January 31st, 2007: "Reporter Judith Miller testified Tuesday [01/30/07] that former vice presedential aide I. Lewis 'Scooter' Libby identified a CIA operative to her on two occasions on dates earlier than he had told investigators he first heard the information from another reporter. [NP] Miller ... said Libby identified the wife of a prominent Iraq war critic as a CIA employee in meetings on June 23 and July 8, 2003. [NP] Libby, then Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, told the FBI and a grand jury that he thought he was hearing about Valerie Plame's CIA job for the first time from NBC's Tim Russert on July 10, 2003. [....] Five government officials, including ex-White House press secretary Ari Fleischer, also have testified that they discussed Plame and her CIA job with Libby before July 10. [NP] On Tuesday [01/30/07], the jury saw notes Libby took on or about June 12 that indicated Cheney told Libby then that the war critic's wife worked at the CIA. [....] Libby now says his memory failed him when he spoke with Russert and other reporters. [NP] Special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald brought out that Miller did not mention the June 23 meeting in Libby's office during her first grand jury testimony - after she finally decided Libby had freed her from a promise not to discuss their conversations. [NP] Miller testified that at Fitzgerasld's request she went back and found notes of the June 23 meeting and then described it in a later grand jury appearance. [....] Wilson said he was sent to Niger in 2002 to answer questions from Cheney about reports Iraq was trying to buy uranium for nuclear weapons there. He said he debunked the story and his report should have reached Cheney long before Bush repeated the uranium story in his January 2003 State of the Union address. [NP] Miller recalled that Libby told her that the CIA, not Cheney, sent Wilson to Niger and Wilson's wife worked in the 'bureau.' She initially thought he meant the FBI, but 'through the context of the discussion, I quickly determined it to be the CIA,' she testified. [NP] Miller also discussed a second meeting with Libby, at a local hotel restaurant on July 8, 2003. She said Libby mentioned that Wilson's wife worked for the CIA division specializing in weapons of mass destruction."
